Still Distracted After All These Years: Help and Support for Older Adults with ADHD Hardcover – October 4, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
One of the foremost ADHD experts tackles adult cases in the aging generation and offers a practical, helpful guide for those with and without a diagnosis
Do you…- Forget to pay bills
- Live in a disorganized environment
- Struggle with depression and anxiety
- Procrastinate on projects, even ones that initially excite you
- Have high levels of conflict with those close to you
- Have a child diagnosed with ADHD and/or a family history of learning disorders
If some of these patterns sound familiar, you may have undiagnosed ADHD. ADHD in adults is one of the most common disorders. Living with ADHD in our later years is hugely influenced by multiple factors: co-occurring issues, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and learning disorders combined with a heightened level of stress, the presence or lack of support from others, and the number of people we are responsible for, can complicate and intensify the effects of ADHD.
The good news is that you’ve come to the right place to learn more about how older adults with ADHD can lead calmer, happier, more productive lives. Dr. Kathleen Nadeau, a foremost authority on ADHD, has been working with this underserved and underrepresented population. Dedicated to the health and wellbeing of today’s older adults with ADHD, Still Distracted After All These Years offers strategies to build a support system, gain better control over your daily life and create a more ADHD-friendly retirement.

Dr. Nadeau is a frequent lecturer both in the United States and abroad and provides professional training seminars on topics related to ADHD. She is the founder and Clinical Director of The Chesapeake Center - ADHD, Learning and Behavioral Health, the largest private ADHD specialty clinic in the United States. She has spent her career identifying and working to bring attention to underserved segments of the ADHD population. Dr. Nadeau is the author or co-author of more than a dozen books related to ADHD that address ADHD issues across the lifespan, from her best-selling book for children, “Learning to Slow Down and Pay Attention”, to her latest book on older adults with ADHD, “Still Distracted After All These Years”. - Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2023Kathleen Nadeau knows what she has written about... after years of wondering what was wrong with me...time, too chatty, anxious, clutter, detailed, impulsivity, etc. Turns out I am ADHD! What a relief to put a name on my issues! This book helps a person understand, face and navigate as the new person you have discovered. Really beneficial! There is little written on adult ADHD, and this is the best that is out there!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024This book is written by someone truly expert and respected in the field. It’s an ideal read if you weren’t diagnosed with ADHD until later in life or if you or your loved one is struggling more with ADHD during menopause or retirement. Since retiring my mom (72 with severe ADHD) is terribly addicted to social media and it’s making her focus and memory so much worse! I recently heard her confirm dinner plans on the phone then watched her call her friend back 4 times to double check what they’d decided. If this sounds familiar this book may help. On the other hand if you’ve already read a dozen books on ADHD some of the basics will seem repetitive.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2022Dr. Nadeau's new book about the continuity of ADHD symptoms through a lifetime is the first one written about the impact of ADHD on senior citizens. She includes current information about diagnosis and treatment as well as other issues related to adults with ADHD symptoms, ages 60-95. She examines topics regarding marriage and friendship, economic realities, and isolation with the focus on ADHD-specific issues . This book includes quotes and stories from her recent interviews with over 150 older people diagnosed with ADHD. Dr. Nadeau includes her research and experience from a 50-year career in psychology, specializing in treating people with ADHD symptoms of all ages.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2022This is one of the best books I’ve read about ADHD in years. I originally picked this up to learn more about ADHD for adults over 60 and found this information highly informative and useful for many different age groups. I particularly appreciated the information about parents and young adult children with ADHD. If you’re going to read one book, this is the one to pick up right now. The research is up to date, there are a boat load of resources and strategies, and most important: the lens of acceptance, understanding, and compassion shines through.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023Yes this book is aimed at the older (elderly?) adult, with a seeming lean toward those in retirement and provides helpful insights. My disappointed lies in the fact that ADHD in women is often discovered during perimenopause and continues post menopause due to the effects of a woman's decrease in estrogen. Women often present with anxiety, mood disorders, emotional dysregulation, and losses in executive function during this time. Yet the author does not include any information on the menopause transition and its effect on ADHD (or presenting symptoms similar to ADHD). The book is helpful, but less so for women whose unique struggles are not highlighted.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2022As someone in this book's target audience, I was very happy to receive an Advance Review Copy (ARC) from NetGalley. "Still Distracted After All These Years" is an excellent resource for older adults like me, who have either been diagnosed with ADHD, are currently pending/waiting for a diagnosis (like me), or who feel like living with undiagnosed ADHD all these years is a very strong possibility.
Dr. Nadeau's writing style, and the layout of the book makes for very easy reading. There's no need to read chapters in sequence, if you want to jump around, you can easily do so. The book is conversational in tone, with terms explained, and is equally helpful to those already in the process of figuring out if they have ADHD, and those brand new to all of this "ADHD stuff". There are also plenty of additional ADHD related resources provided.
I definitely recommend this book for anyone who feels that they may have been walking around with undiagnosed ADHD all their lives and never knew. Even if you don't have a formal diagnosis, the information in this book is very helpful if you're searching for answers.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2023I have found this is just another Psychologist over diagnosing an issue. My goodness when she goes through the list of symptoms, over and over again, it describes anyone and everyone. I wish more time was spent on dealing with or accentuate the gifts that are given to those with ADHD.
Just another well educated quack that brought me down a dark hole in the first 4 chapters. Who is to say what the NORM is on mental health. Maybe it is those of us with ADHD. Maybe we are the norm. After 65 thousand years of our evolution, I'm afraid the NORMAL Brain was lost 10,000 years back. We're all suspect now. But she has a calming voice.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2023The book content is directed for retirees. I was hoping for content that was including mid career as a starting point.

This is one of the best books I’ve read about ADHD. As an adult in his 50s I read this book to help me cope with my new found diagnosis. But after reading it I’ve come away with great suggestions on suggestions for me but also my son who is a teen with ADHD. And these suggestions are not only logical, I can see myself implementing them. Which most people with ADHD would agree is huge! Thanks, Dr. Nadeau.
