Still a Pygmy is an accessible and riveting memoir by Isaac Bacirongo, a Pygmy raised in the forests of eastern DR Congo and almost accidentally educated. He went on to become a successful businessman, marry a “town girl” and turn advocate for indigenous rights. His story would be extraordinary enough in the best of times, but he made these personal gains in the 1990s - rugged years by anyone’s reckoning where the fall-out from the Rwandan genocide coupled with authoritarian and corrupt home rule made life insecure for vast populations. Bacirongo and his family were forced to flee their homeland for Kenya where they were registered as refugees and ultimately relocated to Australia. His narrative is recorded for us by Michael Nest, an Australian writer who also lived for years in the DR Congo. They met in Sydney and their shared interest in Congolese politics and culture grew into this collaboration which has brought us perhaps the first memoir of its kind. The word Pygmy invokes an idea of a person not quite real enough to live in the 21st Century. This memoir is compelling, enlightening and certainly very real.

This is a great biography of a unique individual. Michael Nest does a great job of communicating Isaac’s story in a way that retains Isaac’s own words and reveals his own perspective and culture. My husband and I have lived in Africa for several years, and we enjoyed reading Isaac’s explanation of the thought process behind some of the common African cultures and perspectives. This book really brings to life the ‘hidden’ world of pygmy culture, as seen in the life of a man who experienced both traditional life in the forest and also the life of an integrated businessman in the city.

Isaac’s life spans a diverse range of environments. His childhood is spent near or in the forest of Eastern Congo, immersed in the pygmy culture. He surmounts incredible odds in his pursuit of going to school, such as raising chickens in order to pay school fees, and then his parents eating his chickens because for them daily food was more important than the future investment, and they did not support his quest to go to school. He marries a ‘city girl’ and settles in the town center of his region, starting a small business to support himself. As his business grows and his family grows, he decides to move to the big city of Bukavu, a move made more challenging because of his inferior status as a pygmy in the eyes of other tribes. He gains the means and motivation to fight for fair treatment for his people, the pygmies of Congo, but then faces resistance from pygmies who prefer to endure the present discrimination rather than expose themselves and risk being further oppressed by authorities. The aftermath of the genocide in Rwanda moves into Eastern Congo, endangering Isaac and his family and prompting them to flee.

This book is a really compelling read, and gives a lot of insight into the lives of Pygmies as well as residents in Congo more generally. There was so much that I didn't expect about these fascinating people, but I was still left with the conviction of our core commonalities. I highly recommend reading this book both for fun and for edification!

This is an excellent, well written book. Isaac's story is very compelling and he is a thoughtful, interesting and inspiring person. This was definitely worth the almost two month wait for it to arrive and I read it over one weekend! Although many of the events are depressing and difficult, Isaac's reflections and responses to what happens make the best of every situation. He shows that the same things motivate us all beyond survival; family, money, politics etc. It is one of those books that found me wanting to learn more of the history, culture and political situation in the Congo and other parts of central Africa. I highly recommend this book!

A fascinating unique story that needed to be told and understood by a global audience. It is very well written and easy to read. The reader comes to understand the characters and their perspectives and challenges at a deep level. This is a story of personal resilience, hope and transition. It explains the identity politics of a very complex and conflict ridden region through an individual's story. The authors should be applauded for sharing this testimony with the world.
