Editorial Reviews

Review

“There is nothing “still” in the remarkably visceral poems of Alexander Long’s third collection, Still Life, and nothing is at rest in these restless and edgy poems. Conversational and kinetic, these poems chart the traces left by the shifting overlays of the templates of literature, rock-and-roll, and contemporary culture. As each poem in Still Life attempts to fix a focus upon a scene or subject, the protean natures under view draw the poet into the eddies and complexities of reflection. This is a powerful and moving collection of poems.”
—  David St. John

Format: Paperback
Alexander Long has been publishing first-rate poems since his first book, VIGIL was published in 2006. STILL LIFE is his most mature work to date. I, for one, can't wait to read his newest work. The majority of STILL LIFE is stunning. Long wears his influences on his sleeves, & he makes no apologies for doing so. Larry Levis & Walt Whitman undergird many of the best poems in STILL LIFE. But Long's voice & his choices of subject are entirely his own. At once lyrical & narrative, Long raises the difficult questions history places before each of us, which too few poets have the temerity to address. He takes on the ugly realities of race, for just one example, head on. It's astonishing Long isn't more widely recognized for his work, which is consistently original, honest, & uncompromising. His emotional honesty may account for the lack of reception his work has received in larger circles. That's a shame. If more poets followed Long's lead, we might have a culture of poetry that favors the work over the personality & book sales. And we might have a larger culture of aware citizens unafraid to face the hard questions that continue to infect our national & personal conversations.
