Seeing Jordie come into the bar was a surprise to both of them, as it is obvious that this is not her kind of place, and their Plan A did not include killing her here and now.
So Plan B takes effect, and when she exits, Bolden and Kinnard follow her…and suddenly there is a shot, and Bolden is dead. Before Jordie can realize what is happening, she has been knocked unconscious, and sometime later, she is aware of being bound in the back seat of a car.
After an intense start, what happens next in Sting will keep you turning pages, but the details are sometimes tedious. Hovering over it all is the question: is Kinnard going to kill Jordie, or is something more happening? Over a two-day period, she is kept bound and then blindfolded, but she is also kept hydrated and fed. She has figured out by now that her fate is tied to the criminal financial schemes that her brother Josh and Panella did together. Panella escaped, and Josh was taken into witness protection, so neither has paid for his crimes.
Intense events kept me hopping as I tried to figure out what Kinnard’s goal might be, as it was obvious there was more going on beneath the surface.
When suddenly and unexpectedly, Jordie turns things around and gets the upper hand, everything changes. Cops and EMTs are on the scene, and within hours, we learn more about Kinnard.
The intense attraction between the two is an undercurrent seething between them, so it won’t be long until they act on their feelings.
Will Panella be captured at some point? Will Josh, who has escaped from protection, turn himself in? What will ultimately happen, if anything, between Shaw Kinnard and Jordie? And what will we learn about the relationship between Jordie and Josh that has kept her tied to him, enabling him for years?
The story takes us from Tobias to the French Quarter of New Orleans…and ends up in Bayou Gauche where all the pieces come together in a stunning reveal. Nothing is as it seems, and I did not see any of these last pieces unfolding. A delightful story that kept me engaged, this one earned 4.5 stars.
During this time Josh inexplicably escapes the Marshalls keeping him safe. Must be the money! Thirty million dollars has been scammed from investors. There is lots of action and suspense, some of it not to be understood until later in the story. The love story is sweet; yes, it is an HEA, but something about their storyline seemed off. I can't say more without spoiling the story, but I will say it was a good read anyway!
If you’re not sensitive to adult language and moderately graphic sexual content, this is a suspense novel that is going to grab your attention and keep you turning the pages. Mind you, as a Stephen King fan, I am accustomed to novels with excessive foul language, so even the excesses in Sting did not turn me off. My objection to the language is more in regards to the aesthetics of the word choice. But, to dwell on that would take away the real value, for me and many others, of this well-written yarn that will twist you this way, then that.
Indeed, the twists include not merely the plot. Even the character’s attitudes and desires will keep your interest. Although this is plot-driven, the rich characters will keep your interest right up to the end.
Length: Print, 416 pages; Audible, 11 hours 40 minutes.
Q - Target Audience/Genre and is it marketed as Nonfiction or Fiction:
A – Suspense.
Q - How was this book obtained?
A – Bought on Amazon during pre-order.
Q – If this is fiction, is it a plot-driven or a character-driven story?
A – This is plot driven with strong character development.
Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes.
Q – If this is a recurring character or a series, does it have a cliffhanger ending?
A – This is not billed as a recurring character, but I do expect more in the future. At any rate, this does not have a cliffhanger ending.
Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.
Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – Sting is a leisure read.
Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – Adult language and themes. There are a large number of obscenities, particularly the f-bomb, plus a few sexual endeavors that some might not appreciate, while others will thoroughly enjoy. In short, Sting is a suspense novel for adults.
Q – What age group is this suitable for?
A – If this was a film, it would be rated either PG-17 or R for language and sexual content. The sexual scenes are not overly graphic, but they do go beyond what some parents would prefer their teenagers to read.
Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – The sexual encounters are pretty well described, but the near obsessive nature of them is almost, I emphasize the word, almost, over the top. To go into further explanation might, for some, be a spoiler.
Other than that, I believe the language used will offend many. As for myself, I was okay with it, but believe that in terms of the f-bomb, it rarely takes more than half a dozen to make the point. When you populate a book with more than a score, you run the risk of cheapening the impact, which has been done with Sting.
To give a feel for the editing, and the style and flow of this work, I am posting a brief excerpt below.
‘ …When Joe returned, Hick was hanging up in apparent disgust.
“Five minutes of conversation boiled down to two words: still nothing.”
Joe hadn’t expected there to be a breakthrough, but he shared Hick’s disappointment and chagrin. Josh Bennett had been missing for four days, and the only traces of him discovered so far were the ankle monitor and a set of sneaker prints leading from the safe house through a greenbelt about two miles deep that eventually fronted the access ramp of the east– west interstate, where it was assumed he had hitched a ride.
Frustrated, Joe returned to his desk chair and pinched the bridge of his nose till it hurt. “Where is that sniveling little s#@t?”
“He’s littler than when we last saw him.”
Joe lowered his hand from his face and shook his head in bewilderment. “What gets me is that nobody became suspicious when Bennett began making these cosmetic changes.”
“The dry eye was diagnosed by an ophthalmologist,” Hick reminded him. “He was even prescribed drops for it.”
“All right, but the drastic weight loss? I shed twenty pounds, Marsha might or might not notice if I’m standing in front of her buck naked. On Bennett’s frame you’d notice that kind of drop.”
“Not if he dropped it over a six-month time period.”
“I guess,” Joe sighed. “The bottom line, though? He played them like a freakin’ fiddle.”
“Played all of us, Joe,” Hick said grimly.
Joe’s scowl conceded that.
As the afternoon wore on, they decided to use the local evening newscasts to go public with Joshua Bennett’s fugitive status.
Joe called in the office’s media liaison. “Notify the local stations. Tell them in advance that I won’t be answering any questions. I’ll only read aloud a statement, so make it good.”
The agent said jokingly, “What am I supposed to say? Accountant at large? Armed with a deadly calculator?”
Joe didn’t think it was funny. “Say he’s wanted for questioning into his sister’s suspected kidnapping and Mickey Bolden’s murder.”
Hick looked at Joe askance. “He is? Since when?”
“Since I said so,” Joe retorted…’
Brown, Sandra. Sting (Kindle Locations 1742-1759). Grand Central Publishing. Kindle Edition.
I nearly lowered the rating to three stars but, since the novel definitely keeps one turning the pages to find out what happens next, I definitely have to rate this at four stars. Furthermore, despite its faults, I could almost rate this five stars. So, this is a first for me: a novel that I am tempted to rate at three stars is so tightly written that I am tempted to rate it five stars as well.
I would love to read a follow-up novel. I want to add that I have put the audible version in my Audible wish list.
