Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This sassy-looking book offers a little bit of everything. Yes, practical matters are addressed, e.g., learning the stitches, "tools of the trade," and types of yarns, and, yes, there is information that's difficult to find in other places, such as advice about how to start your own knitting group or find free knitting programs online. But it is Stoller's commentary about knitting, its history, and why young women are knitting again that gets the book off to a rip-roaring start. Complementing the narrative sections are vintage pictures, family photos, and funky illustrations. The projects have a hip sensibility (bags, sweaters, a poncho), as do the chapter headings: "Oops, I Knit It Again" for the section on fixing knitting mistakes. A color inset shows the projects off; the illustrations with the instructions are black-and-white versions of the same photos. There's plenty here for beginners and skilled veterans alike. Best Beginner Knitting Book!

Best Beginner Knitting Book!
I recently picked up a knitting kit and made a blanket a very easy lap blanket and am hooked on knitting. The kit I had purchased had sketchy directions and I'm sure I didn't follow them like I was supposed to. Heck, it didn't even show me how to hold the yarn or cast off when I finished the blanket. So I bought this book hoping to learn more knitting basics.Ya'll, this book is the knitting bible and an absolute must purchase unless you are an advanced knitter. You will not be disappointed plus the writer has a sense of humor which makes it fun. The illustrations are excellent and easy to follow.Bottom line, buy this book and get your knit on!

...and It has been an absolute pleasure! Debbie Stoller reminds me of the best teachers in life: funny, smart, cool, and just has a gift for explaining things so you can easily understand and remember them. I know for sure it's an awesome book for beginers, since I was one. I got a very solid foundation of knowledge to work from, both from this book and the entire stitch n bitch series. Looking back, I thinks it's impressive how much she manages to teach you in just this first volume:
-Information about knitting needles and yarn (the various weights and fibers, how to read a yarn label, etc)
    - How to cast on and bind off
    -Knit and purl stitches
    -knitting structure and gauge
-knitting flat and in the round
-follow charts (I have never struggled with this and I believe it's because one of the first things I ever knit was this cool little exercise where you knit a textured heart following a chart)
    -Increase and decrease
    -Make cables
-Work stripes, intarsia and fair isle (while catching the floats as you go, no matter which hand the yarn is in)
-Fix problems such as drop down a stitch, ladder up using crochet hook. This chapter is amazing and should be required reading for all beginner knitting classes. Learn from the stitch doctor.
    -Buttonholes, seaming, blocking, tassles/fringe/com-poms
Plus fun things like recommended reading, tips and tricks, famous knitters, starting a knitting group...
The book is also a great read. Along with a history of knitting she tells her own story and we get to see pics of her family and learn how the tradition was passed down. In fact there are cool, vintage pics of people knitting throughout. Which brings me to a point: get the print edition! The kindle edition only has some of the pics.
This craft has enriched my life in a way that I never imagined when I first picked up this book about 12 years ago. Thank you Debbie!

When I decided to try my hand at knitting my boyfriend's mother took a few books out of the library for me to look at. This book was one of them. By the time the return date was due, I knew I wanted to keep it so I went on Amazon and ordered it. This book had great instructions and patterns that I would want to knit. (the other books that she took out for me looked like the patterns came out of the 80's) This book had stuff for people in their 30's and below. Most likely not all patterns will suit your taste. But let me tell you for the price of the book, even if you only love a few it's well worth it. The writting is great and informative and kicked me into knitting obsession. This isn't just an instruction manual for the actual knitting, its for the whole process. Starting out I had no idea about yarn weights, fiber options, knitting websites or how to find knitting groups. There were some mistakes in the first publishing that you need errata to fix, and you can find online on the author's website but this seems to be VERY common in knitting books (with patterns that say k1, p1, k2to I'm sure it is hard to check but these mistakes were fixed and after checking my book already had the corrections. I loved her book so much I bought, Stitch 'N Bitch Nation and Happy Hooker. I would definately recommend this book to someone looking to learn and some people just looking for more patterns for their collection. There are patterns for scarves, shirts, sweaters, a cat bed, a dog sweater, bikini, backpack, cell case, just to name a few with two sewing projects for you organization needs (a needle case, and a circular needle organizer)

I lovelovelove this book! I bought myself a "Teach Yourself to Knit" kit and ended up cursing...a lot. So much for knitting being relaxing! But after reading so many positive reviews, I picked this up from my library (and just got it as a holiday gift-yes!!). I loved reading about Stoller's family history of crafting, as well as the history of knitting. How interesting to know that knitting's popularity has gone in cycles. I can just imagine some 20's flapper saying "Knitting is so passe!" But the best part is the clarity of the instructions. Both the drawings and the wording are clear, so it's really easy to follow. I also like how (in the first part of the book, not the patterns per se) Stoller gives beginner projects to show how different techniques are introduced. I am currently knitting my first project, a scarf for my BFF. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it's name: Ribbed for Her Pleasure! I like the patterns in this book as well. Not everything will float your boat, but after seeing dozens (and DOZENS) of books with horrible, clunky, dull knitting patterns, it's nice to see some fresh, hip designs (although when browsing the SnB site, I like the patterns in SnB Nation a bit better).

I can't wait to join the nearest SnB group, and I'm already fantasizing about yarn...mmm...yarn. Debbie Stoller rocks the casbah, but if I end up in Knitters Anonymous, it's all her fault. ;-)

What a perfect book to start out with. I bought this book to refresh my skills. I learned to knit as a child but I wanted to learn some more advanced skills and learn to do something more complicated than a basic scarf. This is a lovely balance of all the basic stitches along with a few patterns. Great to learn from scratch and invaluable as a reference. The combination of instructions and patterns makes this very fun.

I love the way each pattern has a list of the skills required to make the project and page numbers of those required skills so you can learn anything you need to complete the project.

Another skill I wanted to learn when I bought this book was to be able to read patterns. This has also been a great way to learn that skill.

I love this book and I have not regretted the purchase for a moment. Great place to start and it really opens up the beautiful world of knitting and all its possibilities. I will be using it for a few years to come I am sure.

I knew how to knit before I purchased this book, bought originally for one of the knitting pattens that it contained.
I was pleasantly surprised at how informed it was, which is written in a light hearted and slightly whimsical way!
I'm an English knitter and this is by an American Author, so I knew some of the terminology would be different, though it dose contain the English alternative.
I like how Debbie Stroller takes you through all of the pit falls when knitting and how to get out of them, with-out having a nervous breakdown!
This is a must have book for all knitters, whether you are a beginner or an old hand, and I bought mine here on Amazon at a very good price.
