About the Author
Keiry Belton and Barbara Cattoni agree with Audrey Hepburn: ‘Paris is always a good idea’. They devised a guidebook in Stitching up Paris: The Insider’s Guide to Parisian Knitting, Sewing, Notions and Needlecraft Stores with tourists, expat locals or armchair travellers in mind. A Parisian for more than 30 years, Barbara has made Paris craft shops and the people behind them into a livelihood. Through her tour business, www.stitchingupparis.com, she provides individually tailored tours of Paris’s best craft addresses. Keiry arrived in Paris in 2012 and met Barbara through Ravelry’s online knitting network. She blogs about Paris and the stitching scene – including the perils of trying to speak French while knitting. Follow www.stitchingupparisblog.wordpress.com for the latest stories and images of the Paris stitching scene. They can also be found at @stitchingupparis on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

The book covers knitting, embroidery, fabrics, notions, haberdashery, passementerie (and if you don't know what those mean they tell you!), and vintage stores. Besides all the standard fare (address, hours, Metro) there are notes about websites in English, online sales, stock they carry, and my very favorite "Neighborhood Notes" - a little paragraph or two about where you are, and perhaps a suggestion for a stroll.
If you are looking for a comprehensive, facts only listing, this is not the book. If you're looking for recommendations and suggestions, beautiful pictures, a bit of history while you shop, and something to psych you up for your next trip - buy the book.
I have been fortunate to travel to Paris every 6 months or so with my husband who has collaborations with the university at Jussieu. Beyond touring amazing places in Paris, I have visited many yarn/sewing/fabric shops and have enjoyed participating in various weekly knitting groups. I met Keiry at one of the weekly groups and am thrilled to finally see this book in print. I would have loved owning this book before I travelled to Paris! It would have saved me hours of time, gleaning information from various websites!
The book covers the majority of shops worth seeing, and the photography is really splendid. There also an index organizing shops by craft type and also by arrondissement.
If you are planning a trip to Paris, make sure you make block of some time to visit at least three of these shops and leave some space in your luggage! Oh yes, and take this book with you! Also make sure you sign up for one of the knitting groups. If you are a Francophone, don’t hesitate to add this book to your library.
