Stockholm has got to be one of the best written and produced recordings ever done, for Chrissie. There isn't a bad song in the bunch. She has outdone herself and these songs sound better and better, at every listen. I'm serious. The music is intricate and the lyrics are superb. I have my favorite songs, but they are all great. 'Adding The Blue' is perhaps Chrissie's best. This piece is about a portrait of heartbreak and loss. I say portrait because this very song paints a picture, and the brush-strokes in this song are a masterpiece. If her singing doesn't move you - then nothing will. It moved me to tears. Buy this CD. And play the hell out of it.

For some reason I never got into the Pretenders as a kid in the 80's. I remember seeing videos for "Brass In Pocket" and "Back On The Chain Gang", but they were never a prominent fixture on MTV or VH1 back then outside of those two videos. I never bought one of their albums either. I also remember "Middle Of The Road", and much later, "I'll Stand By You". So, I just went ahead and bought their "Greatest Hits", and that was my introduction. I remember liking most of the songs included on that compilation, but it wasn't until 2002's "Loose Screw" that I went ahead and bought an actual album from the band.

Since their debut in 1979, I believe their reputation and legend has only grown, and established them as a classic band from the New Wave/Post-Punk movement (my favorite era). So, now I have all 10 of their albums, and I listened to all of them before listening to Chrissie Hynde's first solo album, "Stockholm", so I could compare and contrast, and put this new album in perspective.

Now, you could argue that Chrissie Hynde has basically been making solo albums already under the Pretenders moniker since 1986's "Get Close". As She has had a constantly rotating line-up of backing musicians with the only other living original band member, Martin Chambers.

Chrissie Hynde has always been a very good song writer, and this is still evident on "Stockholm" with songs like "Dark Sunglasses", "In A Miracle", "Adding The Blue", etc. Musically, for her age, and for the length of time she has been around, she still manages to find a way of staying relevant, something many of her peers struggle with. She is still musically adventuresome, and avoids being easy listening or cliché.

For the most part, "Stockholm" contains music and lyrics that are quite satisfying upon multiple listens. My choice tracks are "You Or No One", "Dark Sunglasses", "Like The Movies", "You're The One", "A Plan Too Far", "In A Miracle", "House Of Cards", "Sweet Nuthin'" and "Adding The Blue".

I think it was a wise move to go to Stockholm, Sweden and work with Joakim Ahlund of Caesars fame ("Jerk It Out"). They have been one of my favorite newer Swedish bands from the past 15 years, and I have several of their albums, with the best ones being 2005's "Paper Tigers" and 2008's "Strawberry Weed". Plus, Hynde works with Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John, who I am only vaguely familiar with. All of these collaborations adds the right touch to "Stockholm", making it a solid proper solo debut from Hynde.

It's been six years since "Break Up The Concrete", and I am still looking forward to future music from Hynde in any form solo or as the Pretenders. I'm a fan now, and arguably I was since I was a kid, but I just didn't recognize it until much later. Here's how "Stockholm" compares with Hynde's previous works:

Anyone who has been a fan of The Pretenders and of Chrissy's voice and song writing must possess this 2014 solo album, accompanied by excellent musicians she worked with on it. I had held out getting until recently, and play it often on my stereo or cue the songs up on my ITUNES mix on my l computer along with her Pretenders songs, and her Bob Dylan cover album , Standing in the Doorway, she made during the pandemic, another must have.

Seriously!!! It's very good. Great production quality, great songwriting and the voice.... CH is one of a few that you can spin and everyone knows the voice even if they've never heard the music. It couldn't hurt that the collaboration is with John from Peter Bjorn and John. This isn't my favorite CH effort but its up there. I'm not looking for a rehash of the first few Pretenders albums. Those albums can't be topped; they were from a time when the radio stations in the US were playing utter crap (and it's only gotten worse!!). I'd rather hear what this time-honored rock veteran can put out there for us to enjoy. Not a 60+ year old rocker trying to warble her throat out and fit into hiphop inspired make up and clothing. I will never grow tired listening to her voice. Blondie, Siouxsie Sioux and other aging female rockers can't hold the notes like Chrissie. So buy it and support this artist. I'd really give this cd 4.5 stars but the 1 star review left here made me want to counter that horrible mistake of a review. Thus the 5 stars.

It's Chrissy. I've been listening to The Pretenders since day one, so maybe I'm a lil' biased. She went from punk to pop in 4 years and despite that, The Pretenders were still always rough around the edges- and in a unique way (largely due to her style of rhythm guitar- James Honeyman Scott was quoted as saying "I never knew where to come in on the leads") . There were people out there back in the 80's that were saying "Back On The Chian Gang" just didn't cut it like "Up The Neck". What you get here is a very polished work, it's a pop work and a very well crafted one. It also showcases her gruff voice beautifully. Besides that distinctive voice, she also writes her own songs, she plays guitar and she never felt she had to sell herself as an object. Almost 30 years later she's still a cut above the rest. If you are looking for a Pretenders album- it ain't here. If you love her voice- you'll enjoy this. A+

I'd class myself as a lapsed Pretenders fan. I bought all their early singles, the first two albums and also saw them live back in the 70's.

After that I lost touch with their music other than seeing one of the line-ups perform at the Latitude Festival.

Having heard several really good tracks from this release on the excellent Radio Paradise internet radio station, I thought I'd give the whole album a try... and I'm very glad I did!

Quite why Chrissie chose to release this under her own name rather than as The Pretenders I don't know.

What I do know is, certainly for me, this is her strongest collection of material since the first classic Pretenders album.

Great songs, excellent performances and really well recorded.

If you are also a Pretenders fan of old, I'd urge you to give Stockholm a listen!

That voice never ages. This a really good album with a couple of real gems on it. Favourite songs: Dark Sunglasses, A Plan Too Far, Down the Wrong Way (with unmistakable Neil Young on guitar) and the sultriness of Tourniquet! Only complaint and it's a small one, is it's pretty short, around 38 minutes. But that just means I play it over and over! I've been a Pretenders fan for over 35 years, and I think hard core fans of Pretenders will love this record. Added bonus? Bought the white vinyl and it came with a cd for my car! What could be better?
