When Drew comes back, the reason he gives is just not up to snuff. I can see that kind of drastic action being taken if there's abuse, but if you love someone, as Drew claims he did, you just don't do that. And the fact that others encouraged it without bothering to consider the repercussions---the affect it will have on Hill? What the heck? By the way, that mother was a real piece of work. That is NOT what I call support.
As I got closer to the end of the story I kept thinking to myself, "No, there needs to be more." You can't just make that leap in such a short time, especially considering we hear what the affect Drew leaving had on Hill, and I'm not talking about the Bah, Humbug aspect. When I read that I almost cried and I so rarely cry at books, but Cassie did SUCH an excellent job giving us Hill's pain.
I think that this story needs to be more of a novella, not a Christmas Advent short. At the least, it needed to be on the longer side of this year's offerings. I understand the concept of HFN, but I just didn't see with the way things were left how it would be possible for Hill and Drew to have any kind of relationship, much less a happy, loving, and fulfilling one with trust. There was just too much leftover emotional trauma for me to accept even a HFN for Hill and Drew. But if Cassie wanted to expand on it---not re-write, because there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the writing as it is---I would totally buy it again and read it.
I love a good second chance story and there’s just something about the Christmas season that makes reading one seem so much better. I found the premise of the story really appealing; two men separated for almost a decade suddenly reunited right before Christmas. I really felt for Hill’s character; Drew was pretty much the love of his life and seven years after he’d left, Hill still wasn’t over the man and every Christmas since was merely something to be tolerated at best. I really didn’t agree with Drew’s decision not to tell Hill the real reason he was leaving but I did like that, once he felt he was ready, he came back to, if not reclaim Hill’s affections, to at least try and make things right.
The story itself was really good; both men were stubborn yet showed the ability to bend when necessary though nothing in their interactions was easy, especially in the beginning. I was drawn fairly quickly into the story and found myself invested in both Drew and Hill’s happiness in a ridiculously short amount of time. This really had all the makings of an excellent second chance story and I just wanted to keep reading. Aside from how much I loved this, however, I found myself more than a little disappointed by the ending. While it could be looked at as a happy for now, things didn’t quite feel up to that point on Hill’s end for me and, of course, I felt these two men deserved a solid happy ending; I was kind of crushed that I didn’t get to see that. Still, this was a solid story with a good execution and if you don’t mind not getting a happily ever after, it was a great read.
