In Carey Baldwin’s STOLEN, she creates a fast moving mystery thriller that focuses on family issues, murder, kidnapping, mental illness, and romance. In addition to the continuing development of her two protagonists, a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Catlin Cassidy and FBI profiler Special Agent Atticus Spencer’s romantic relationship, she creates a storyline full of mystery and intrigue from the very first page to the heart-breaking ending. Baldwin adds Cassidy and Spencer’s backstory including details of a past case affecting his family. They fly to Denver in search of finding a US Senator’s daughter, Laura Chaucer, who is missing.
The author creates interesting support characters giving details of their roles in the storyline as she proceeds to introduce them to readers. Baldwin adds several subplots changing the direction and momentum of the storyline. Cassidy and Spencer’s investigation reveals antagonists who have very evil agendas. Danger seems to follow both of them throughout the entire story. The author places readers on Cassidy’s shoulder as she investigates Laura’s past that gives insight to Cassidy’s medical opinions of Laura’s psyche. Cassidy finds Laura’s past adds an interesting dynamic to Laura’s relationships with her family, doctors, and friends.
The storyline takes Cassidy and Spencer’s investigation in several directions keeping readers guessing as to what is happening. Baldwin builds suspense and intrigue taking the plot of STOLEN toward an ending full twists and turns and surprises. She keeps her readers on pins and needles as she reveals the identity of those guilty of manipulation and murder. STOLEN’S ending delivers an ending uncovering unpredictable evil monsters.
