In addition to my ARC I bought this book so I'd have a copy for my shelf, that's how much I liked it. This genre isn't one I typically seek out, but I can love a book in any genre if it sucks me in and shows me a good time. Yep, I'm that kind of a reader. A Stolen Kiss did just that. It's not your typical Fairy Tale. It's fresh and new, easy to slide into, and nothing is what you think it's going to be.
What I loved most about this book was the story world. Every forest, kingdom, marsh, and creature had a life of their own--and I was especially captivated by the fact that every creature was fresh and new, even the ones we've seen in other stories work better in this book than any other I've read. There are centaurs and creatures of the author's own making, and they are frightening, delightful, terrifying, or humorous in turn.
The characters are real and quickly emerge as individuals. Strong female characters abound in this tale, with male characters equally true to human nature. What I'm trying to say is that they're believable and realistic. Another side note: I love the way magic works in this world. From the way the sorcerers access magic, to the WRITTEN laws and clauses surrounding it.
This is a delightful well-written read. Highly recommended.
Would be a great read for tweens or younger as it's quite clean. I'm almost thirty and loved it too, so it works for many.
A Stolen Kiss instantly became one of my go-to crummy day reread stories. It has all my favorite fairy tale elements: adventure, swordplay, love, magic, friendship, mythical creatures, but uses them in a way that feels fresh. There's pure fun, and also sadness, a great romp that still encompasses all range of human emotion, with battles that are hard fought and victories that come at great cost. Not once did I feel as though the story promised something that it didn't deliver or that things came too easily to be satisfying. I loved every second, and it's not lost any of its luster with multiple readings.
I look forward to Kelsey Keating's next book. ^.^
