This story will blow your mind and should be discussed in schools along with every other civil rights curriculum! There's never any talk anywhere in mainstream media that discusses the approximate 200,000 Scandinavian and European civilians that were stolen - ripped apart from their families and loved ones by the Islamic Corsairs (of the Barbary Coast) to be sold into slavery as domestic slaves and oars (ships) slaves with little to no chance of ever regaining their freedom. This book starts with one small European coastal town and then blossoms into the harsh realities that these stolen individuals would have experienced at the hands of their new Islamic masters, e.g., pashas and sultans of the Ottoman Empire. Men, women, children, mother's with babies, daughters, sons, young or old, were all thrust into unthinkable fates.

Barbary Pirates take Irish people as prisoner and sell men, women and children into slavery.

Great Book. This is a bit of history never taught in any of the public schools or the four universities I attended. Raids of this type on the coast of Ireland, Greenland, Great Britain, and even raids on the early settlers of North America were not uncommon. Fortifications were built along the British Isles to protect residents from the Barbary pirates. The book uses letters and records from the period of 1630-1670 to show how far North the Barbary Pirates ranged. Complaints were registered with the British rulers of the almost absolute control of the waters between Ireland and Great Britain by the Barbary Pirates. British and French ships and smaller fishing craft were captured, pillaged and either sunk or taken as a prize with the captured crew members taken prisoner and sold into slavery on their return to the Barbary coast. Stories include recounts of sailors sold into slavery as oarsmen on galleys, spending their entire life chained to an oar. Some were able to escape and others found freedom by exhibiting more commercial skills. Wives and daughters were sold into harems or prostitution. The author gives a detailed description of the life in the British Isles as well of that in Algeria.
