First, there were a couple of times where I guess the author mixed up who was where. One scene is in a carriage and it seems like they're in one position but then they're in another. The next time it happened was in the dining room and first his hand was there and then it was something else. I noticed I had to re-read the sections to figure it out. Then there was a sex scene on the bed that sounded confusing by the description being off.
Then there are the conversations. I know that people spoke differently in that time period than they do now, but I've read other dated books and they didn't sound as stilted as the conversations in this book. Sometimes the wording came off stiff and robotic.
Then there's just plenty of nothing happening in the middle of the story. And I got bored by it and started skipping pages so I could just finish the book.
It definitely seems like none of them think through their decisions before just doing things that don't make too much sense. Even though they continuously run over the same thoughts in their minds again and again.
I also noticed that some chapters would start with something to pique interest only to double back and explain what happened even briefly before that moment that lead up to it. It felt like a bait and switch.
And maybe finally, people complained about the torture in the book. The villain is supposed to be very despicable and the depths of that probably has something to do with what he wanted from our leading lady, I never found out, but if I can try to make it clear - There's an attack on her that cuts her arm badly, and there's a short scene where she is attacked again and loses two fingernails. I'm not trying to spoil it, but it had a lot of people commenting how bad it was, it's not that bad, but in truth I was very done with the story by that point and I had begun skimming a bit.
I saw a lot of decent reviews and then I saw some very bad ones and I thought I'd give it a chance. In the end, it came down to poor editing, poor pacing, and well...poor almost everything else.
