This is an easy 5 stars since this thing delivers. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is currently at 4 stars since he does not use it to cook as much as I wish he would.
Import Foods has provided me excellent service and communication. Shipment was fast and the product was safely packed.
I ordered this 3 cup mortar and pestle after all the positive reviews on Amazon and from professional chefs. I wanted a quality product I could use for a variety of cooking projects--guacamole, pesto, spice grinding, etc... My 1 1/2 cup marble mortar is a bit small for guacamole.
The initial 3 cup mortar I received apparently slipped by quality control, as it had a substantial piece of the base that had broken off reattached. The seam was visible 360 degrees.
There was a bit of confusion when I brought this to Import Foods attention the day it was delivered 12/7 when I phoned to report the defect. This was probably due to copy cat mortars having glued bases and some purchases not realizing the units are not perfectly smooth on the outside and intentionally rough finish on the inside.
However, a few photos later of the defect Jerry at Import Foods promptly responded, as I received an email on 12/8 and a voice mail. I'm sorry I missed his call. He was very gracious and is sending out a replacement mortar due to the second quality mortar originally shipped slipping through quality control, an unusual circumstance he told me.
I really appreciate Jerry's prompt attention to this matter after I was able to illustrate the defects with photos. I have confidence in Import Foods as a reliable and responsive seller and I am looking forward to receiving the replacement mortar in 2 days, seasoning it and putting it to use. I will update my review when it arrives.
UPDATE: Just as Jerry promised the replacement mortar arrived within 2 says safely packed and as promised first quality--no defects! Now I'm off to season it with some lemon and rice so I can put it to use. I wish all seller's were as responsive as Import Foods and stand behind their products.
UPDATE 2: Since having this the replacement mortar and pestle it sees daily use in our kitchen. During the holidays we made pumpkin pie and freshly ground the allspice. We have also used the mortar and pestle instead of a garlic press, first chopping the garlic cloves a bit before pounding away. This mortar and pestle set is also wonderful for making fresh pesto sauce and sundried tomato pesto.
I have one nit picking complaint though. I'm a Geologist and it seems that most stone products sold to the public labeled granite are not granite. The mortar and pestle I received was made from gabbro. However, this doesn't detract from the mortar and pestle and does not mean that the quality is compromised in any way.
