When Charles Kingsley is found dead with three bullet holes in his chest and a rock under his head, acting Sheriff Kate Jepp faces one of the biggest crimes in Belle County history. Her boss is in the hospital and appointed Kate instead of his senior deputies to assume the role of sheriff in his absence. Deputy Lem Blye and Jeff Ryman resent her wholeheartedly.
Lem and Jeff believe the murderer is Kingsley’s neighbor Sam Swen. Kingsley claimed to have proof that Swen was rustling his cattle. Kate doesn’t think the murder is that clear cut. She notices that an extremely valuable, historic document in his office is hanging crookedly as if someone had attempted to rip it off the wall and steal it.
While Lem and Jeff concentrate their investigation on proving that Swen killed his neighbor, Kate has other ideas that nearly get her killed. Could the killer be Kingsley’s niece, or perhaps Kingsley’s bride of one day?
Then there is attractive ranch foreman Ty Garrison, a drifter with a criminal record who happens to be in the right place at the right time to save Kate's life—more than once. He works for Swen and Lem and Jeff are incensed that Kate would consider dating a “suspect.”
With no support from Lem and Jeff, Kate sets out to solve the murder by herself. Her actions could get her killed—and very probably will get her fired by the sheriff’s department.

This was a cool book. I had heard of Tom Horn but never knew he was a real person or what he did before reading this. Vickie Britton and Loretta Jackson educate while keeping up the suspense right from the start. I've been to Wyoming and their descriptions were spot on. I could see the looming Rockies in the distance and modern day ranchers at work. Kate Jepp, standing in the real sheriff, is a true heroine fighting against office sexism while trying to solve a murder that lot of people don't seem to want to get solved. I thought I knew who the murderer was, but I really didn't see the end coming. It's surprise reminded me of a Ruth Rendell: logical but I was completely fooled. A good modern day police western.
