Instant heart pounding action filled drama as soon as you open the book. Casey is running from Hell Hounds and being inside her head just adds to the desperate need to find cover and get away in one of the best sequences of events I’ve ever read in the genre. It gives the reader a whiplash type of opening that will have you doing a one sit binge read.
Damian will be the first of the sorcerer Nick Katsaros’s warriors to be discovered and brought back into the fold. His skills as a battle expert and practical assessment of all things warlike will help him in acclimate to the new world he has emerged into. With Casey, the fierce modern day female warrior by his side, there is nothing he can’t do.
Casey has always suspected that things aren’t exactly what they seem, and she would be right. Although completely aware of the magic that flows within objects. she hasn’t really known the extent of the destruction it can cause. She has a job to do and she’s hoping the distraction of warrior Damian won’t hold her up.
I am beyond excited about this new series from D.B. Reynolds. An instant favorite in the PNR world. With a wonderfully sweet set up for book two I cannot wait to continue for more of this world.
Top Pick for Summer 2016
If you are a fan of D.B. Reynolds' series "Vampires in America"- you know what to expect with this book. Sexy alpha men, confident and capable women, some magic, some violence, and some very, very steamy encounters.
When I heard that we were getting a spin off series based on Nick - I was beyond excited. Damian delivered on those expectations.
Now- there were a few bumps. I personally want more of Nick's story (which I imagine we will get over the course of the series- with a Nick POV book probably coming last). The romance is rushed (but there are several very sexy love scenes). Cassandra- the heroine is not Cynthia Leighton- she has some issues but because the book is so fast paced I don't think she had enough development to make me sympathetic to those issues. I actually really like Damian's character but I can see where some readers might not connect with him (cocky, smug, incredibly confident, capapble, and adaptable for a man that has been a statue for hundreds of years.) His skills verging to deus ex machina levels.
None of this took away from my enjoyment of the book.
Having said that- I love this world that Reynolds is exploring and expanding! Even when I am not crazy about a particular character her skill as a writer sucks me in. I always want the next book and Damian is no exception.
At the end of the day- I devoured this book because it is fun. While there is always some danger- this is book (and her writing in general) is a bit lighter than a large amount of UF series I regularly read. Sometimes, all I want is a little bit of danger and litter bit of sexy-times (ok- alot). Damian hits those notes perfectly. Damian does lean far closer to the Paranormal Romance side of the spectrum- so if you are expecting the darkness and grit of UF this is probably not the book for you.
For those of you that have never read one of DB's books 1.) Go get yourself a copy of Raphael (Vampires in America #1) 2.) If vampires are not your thing but magic is- you can absolutely read this book without having read the other series (but you should anyway because it is awesome).
Damian is a fast, fun, sexy read that sets up what I feel will be another successful series for DB Reynolds (and oh my gosh can you imagine the crossover potential? I can only hope that happens sooner than later!)
Damian is bad ass, yet his sense of humor really showed through. He's exactly my favorite kind of hero. I loved how he fell for Casey. Their romance was sizzling hot!
And Casey was amazing as well. She was focused on her job and not afraid to use her skills to thwart the villain Sotiris and his network of creeps. I really liked the magic elements, and how Casey's boss Nick and Sotiris went up against each other at the showdown.
I also liked how Reynolds ended the story, and expanded the series world. Seems like the perfect lead in to the next couple's adventure.
If you like strong sexy heroines, and the heroes they fall in love with, you should check this book out.
