This album has so many 5 stars that adding another review with an "I love it" mark isn't adding much. You should already know if you want to buy this, it's Protopunk and Garage Rock! I'm going to review it anyway, because I often find a lack of in-depth reviews on this site.
So it's 1969 (pun intended) and The Stooges just got their album released on the same label that the MC5s original stuff was and, strangely enough, the Doors. Iggy Pop was not the successful solo artist most people know him as today, and the closest thing to "punk" was the MC5 and the Sonics. Then "The Stooges" come out and doesn't change much, since protopunk at this point was pretty much dying. I'm not saying this album is bad (look how many stars) but protopunk was basically all it could be at this point, and it was losing popularity.
So, what's the deal with this album? People call it "punk" but only three songs on the album are considered "Ramones length" and there's a ten minute jam with chanting? Even though it is constantly labeled as punk, it's probably closer to psychedelic punk, or maybe even heavy drone rock. Simple chord progressions, long impressive solos, energetic performance, and everything is extended just before it becomes dull. And then there is "We Will Fall." Most people absolutely hate this song because of how jarringly different it is compared to the rest of the album: slow, chanting, stoned, a bit weird, yet still simple. This song is more reminiscent of Indian music than punk. I actually like it, and I'm probably the only weirdo who likes this song AND the rest of the album, but I wouldn't say they go together well.
The version I have, the 90's reissue CD with no bonus tracks, handles the mastering well, in my opinion. No clipping (like the infamous Raw Power CD) and it doesn't sound like treble or bass was raised or lowered too much. Sucks that there are no bonus tracks, especially since I long to hear the original John Cale mixes, but for a CD that's about 20 or so years old with a cheap price, I can't complain much.
Really, if you want this album, you shouldn't read the reviews, and if you are on the fence, just listen to "1969" or "I Wanna be Your Dog" on YouTube and decide for yourself. High amounts of praise can damage expectations, but the five stars are probably worth it this time.

A Real Cool Time

Overlooked and under sold, I too as a youth might have snubbed this record for its complete lack of artifice, particularly in the era it was released. Ironically, I am now old enough to appreciate its directness. I have never laughed as much listening to a record the first time as I did to this unfashionably disaffected (in the 60s) seemingly inane, and insightful Rock n' Roll explosion. Oh yeh, it's fantastically noisy too! Opening with the wa-wa guitar licks of "1969," I wondered if Iggy Pop (a.k.a. Iggy Stooge) had a time machine. Who'd have thought that tune (the song culled for single release backed with "Real Cool Time" and of course a complete flop in that year) would become more and more relevant with each passing decade? An album of pure adolescent innocence and ferocity, THE STOOGES was accused of being "dumb" but is in fact a return to rock roots instinctively informed by the passing decade of its release as well as the masters of the 50s. The record exerted enormous influence despite extremely low sales and inadvertently revitalized Rock in conjunction with just a few other bands (like The MC5.) This record looks forward in a way these guys could not have foreseen. "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is at turns fabulously compelling, revolting, and hilarious, and my own favorite "Not Right" bares the obsessive motives of youth. I can see why THE STOOGES are referred to as the proto-punks. Docked a point for the long theatre piece "We Will Fall," which isn't bad, but seems to be a bit filler, the re-mastered release, including a bonus disc, is well worth the price of admission. You will swiftly move on to The Stooges' second album FUN HOUSE if you truly love Rock n' Roll.

Heard this at a friend's house and ordered it that day. Up to now, I've only been able to listen to this on the original vinyl without puking--the Elektra CD is that bad. This remaster is very good: you can hear Iggy's voice and tell how young he is and you can hear the nuances in all the songs (which sound dull and repetitive on the Elektra CD). Maybe most important, they included all of Ron Asheton's guitar solos here, which makes this a must buy, even if you're a vinyl freak with the original in decent condition. And the John Cale mixes are interesting, much better in my opinion than most of the reviewers here say.

As to the album itself, if you don't know it, well . . . just listen to the Amazon sampler of "Now I wanna be your dog"--it'll only play you the instrumental lead in, which should be enough. I dare you to name a better, hotter lead than that, ever, except maybe Chuck Berry on "Johnny B. Good." Everybody talks about how the Stooges were punk before punk on this album and metal before metal on Raw Power and free jazz/rock fusion on Fun House, which was recorded before the Stones' Exile on Main Street. All true, but so what. Get this album (buy all three, actually) because the band was fantastic: hot, tight, powerful, as hard-core as it will ever get. You'll never hear anybody play or sing with more conviction than this. In the end that's what counts, and what should last.

The 6 string electric guitar reeks of fuzz and wah. The bass guitar and drums are resonant and seemingly bottomless. The singer's voice is barely formed, barbaric yet melodic. The songs are so simple no one else could have composed them. This is The Stooges. The Psychedelic Stooges. An incredible, revolutionary recording, often imitated yet never equalled. If you follow some of these new-fangled groups but have never heard The Stooges, go remedy. "Fun house" goes even further. But digest this debut before you venture there. This is psychedelic rock'n'roll of the highest order. We are very lucky to have it.

When this album was released in 1969 it was too out there and ahead of its time,to get mainstream acceptance.It is now regarded as a classic and a template for punk,that came 7 years later.The quality recording of this remastered edition,makes the album sound awesome,especially when played loud[the only way to hear it!].The songs...just listen and you'll understand! those guitar riffs,that voice,the bass,the drums its all here. This is well packaged,containing a decent booklet with plenty of info about the stooges and the recording of the album,plus some decent photos. Best tracks on 2nd disc are the full length versions of ann and no fun.If you're looking to discover the stooges,this is your way in.

This expanded remaster of The Stooges' 1969 debut is extremely welcome both for the quality of the remaster (it sounds absolutely brilliant) and for the quality of some of the extra material on the second disc. The contents are basically split into three: the original album on CD1, some unused mixes by producer John Cale which start CD2, and a kind of alternative version of most of the album taking up the rest of CD2.

For anyone that's never heard this, the original album contains three of Iggy Pop's all-time classics in No Fun, I Wanna Be Your Dog and 1969. These and Ann were the only songs they had when they arrived at the studio; they filled out the rest of the album with three new songs written in one evening (Little Doll, Not Right and Real Cool Time) and the dirgey chant We Will Fall. The latter is a bit of a waste of space but while the first three songs mentioned are the greatest, the other four, especially Little Doll, are near-classics of proto-metal/grunge/whatever. The band had not been playing their instruments for very long, though they'd got pretty good by this time, but they were just bursting with youthful enthusiasm, especially guitarist Ron Asheton, whose playing, if not technically brilliant, is inspired, vicious and original.

For anyone that already has the album but is tempted by the additional material, I'd say there are two reservations: 1) they're basically the same performances; 2) the John Cale mixes are worth hearing once or twice but aren't as good as the ones on the original album - they're less powerful and 3 of the 4 are shorter edits; the exception, I Wanna Be Your Dog, only runs longer because it runs nearly a semitone slower. These reservations, however, are completely blown out of the water by the rest of the material. Although they are basically the same recordings, some have entertaining alternate vocal performances, and most are longer than the original versions (especially No Fun and Ann), revealing large quantities of previously unheard and absolutely scorching guitar soloing by Ron Asheton - you have to ask why these tracks were faded on the original album - surely not to make room for the thoroughly dull We Will Fall. These alternate versions are also newly mixed, to an extremely high quality, and sound absolutely superb.

So while the overall sound is far cleaner and sharper than the magnificently grungy production of The Stooges' far more celebrated second album, "Fun House", this is a highly auspicious debut from one of the greatest rock'n'roll bands of all time.
