Editorial Reviews

Justice is served up family-style as Sylvester Stallone and Estelle Getty star in this mother of all action comedies. When top L.A. detective Joe Bomowski (Stallone) gets a rare visit from his feisty mom, Tutti (Getty), his life is turned upside-down. In no time, she is rearranging Joe's bachelor pad and meddling in his affairs, much to his embarrassment and the delight of his girlfriend, Gwen (JoBeth Williams). To add to Joe's problems, Tutti witnesses a murder and becomes the unlikely partner when she refuses to divulge information unless she's allowed in on the investigation. Just when Joe is ready to kill himself, Tutti helps bring down the bad guys, proving Mother-knows-best in this outrageous action-adventure comedy.

STOP! OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT (1992) with Sylvester Stallone, Estelle Getty and JoBeth Williams is one of the most notorious entries in that unique cinematic subcategory of action/comedy. It was also a Worst Picture nominee in the 1992 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.

This one's got a putrid 4.0 IMDb rating yet I can't help but like this odd story of an LAPD sgt. who's mother comes to visit from Newark, NJ. She drives him up the wall, shows his baby pictures to total strangers and tells the most embarrassing stories of her son's childhood. Mom gets caught up in her boy's love life (with superior officer Williams), also involves herelf with a potentionally deadly case. Through several well done action scenes we see this senior citizen begin to imagine herself a supercop!

Lots of amusing situations here but no huge laughs, yet you can't help enjoy petite Estelle Getty as Sly's overprotective mom.

This is an older movie that stars Estelle Getty and Sylvester Stallone as mother and son. Stallone is a cop on the west coast and his mom is coming for a visit from the east coast. This is a VERY funny movie with Estelle Getty doing one thing after another to get on her Little Joey's nerves! This movie will never loose it's ability to make me laugh!

Let's get something straight, my pee-peeing fans: Stallone was NOT trying to follow in Arnold's footsteps with his comedies of the early '90s. He was RETURNING to a genre that he dabbled in before Arnie became known as a comedic screen presence. Remember 1984's "Rhinestone"? That was a genuinely funny musical-comedy that Stallone co-wrote. Why did it bomb at the box office? Your guess is as good as mine - I think that the critical buzz (which was bad) helped kill the film. But that's beside the point, which is that Sly had already proven comedic acting chops well in advance of "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" and the previous year's farcical "Oscar."

Another myth to dispel: people claim that this movie was a commercial failure. Not true, dear readers. While it may have only grossed $28 million domestically (which is actually around the 40 million mark when adjusted for inflation), this rather modestly-budgeted film was a considerable money-maker internationally (which was where Mr. Stallone's bread was buttered for most of the '90s). Why did it do middling box office here in the states? Honestly, the pairing of Sly and 'Golden Girl'Estelle Getty - though comedically inspired and full of potential - was not smart demographically speaking. How many Sly's action fanbase were going to take something like this seriously? Conversely, how many grannies (i.e. the majority of 'Golden Girls' fans) were going to go see a loud, brash action-comedy (featuring a certain amount of violence and bad language)? Neither of the stars' fanbase were on board.

So what does that leave us with? A strangely unengaging hybrid - most of the jokes fall flat, and most of the action sequences feel generic and TV-movieish.

I'll say this, I do like the movie. Probably not my favorite Stallone movie, But I'll settle for it. I couldn't stop laughing! I got to watch it more often. Stallone whoever he stars as in this one, the script is about a detective & his mother who definitely goes over board with tidying things up here & there. & she's prepared to do absolutely almost everything for her son! She is more then just involved! Can he put up with her without getting too irritated? Nothing funnier then a mother who likes being around, & I'm going to say (Close to tagging along) & the most unusual thing she ever did was wash the hand gun with soap & water. Estelle Getty? She's okay, I mean anyone can call her a little odd, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! She is so funny!! She fixes him a huge breakfast, one big enough to feed a small army, I guess she didn't know what he liked exactly. She also buys an illegal gun, & meets the other officers at the station. & feels like her son still needs her support.
Look on the bright side. She's only doing all that because she loves her dear old Son! We all know this movie is a little different then what Stallone is use to, But I'm sure he had a good fun time doing his script. I don't know, I'd have to ask him myself! Bottom line she is desperate to become a part of his society, even if she has to save his life to gain the expression from him that she's looking for!
But would you like being treated like an 8 yr. old or a 7 yr. old?
    It was fun to watch!
Sometimes something good will come of it when you got a relative that'll drive you nuts!

I just recently (like 2 days ago) watched my first Sylvester Stallone movie from back in the day: Demolition Man. I fell in love with that movie and now I'm on a hardcore Stallone binge. Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot was the second one I got around to. Oh man, talk about a riot! This movie is HYSTERICAL! I was laughing, like really laughing, for almost the entire movie. Estelle Getty is hilarious and her and Stallone have great chemistry. I don't get why there are any bad reviews at all. If you are a Stallone fan I definitely recommend this film. I had a blast watching it and it's now one of my favorites. Don't try and rent it; just buy it. It's totally worth the slightly jacked up price.
