The Portamate 6-Shelf Wood Storage Rack is a multipurpose racking system, providing generous storage capacity for wood, pipes, and other long items. It’s ideal for woodworking shops, garages, sheds, or any other area where long items need to be stored neatly. It mounts to the wall, and at less than 4’ in height, it’s that perfect size for both ease-of-use convenience and ample capacity. The recommended mounting distance between the rails is 4-6 feet, but can also depend on your specific needs. If your material is shorter, you can certainly mount them close together (we’ve even heard of people using these to store guitars). Made from powder coated 1-inch steel tubing, there’s a 100lb capacity for each level, meaning you need not worry about heavier items or boards. It’s also fine for outdoor use – it can be mounted to almost anything (even a fence) to bring six levels of storage anywhere you need it.
An excellent solution to managing tight storage spaces, the compact HTC Portamate PBR-001 Wood Rack storage system will help bring order to your workshop. It provides storage for a wide range of products including lumber, moldings, pipes, PVC, and more--neatly and safely.
Easy to install and easy to customize, applications include garage walls, basements, sheds and even outdoor fences. The rack is made from high quality, powder coated tubular steel. It provides six levels of storage with a 110-pound capacity per level on sturdy powder coated steel supports. You can install the Portamate Wood Rack mounted on drywall, masonry wall, steel wall or shed, or wood fence.
The package includes two vertical bars, 12 horizontal bars, and six spacers (plus screws). The PBR-001's vertical bars measure 41 inches high, while the horizontal bars have a shelf depth of 12.25 inches. The recommended distance to support the designed weight capacity is 4 to 6 feet; for longer material or greater weight, multiple wood racks can be used.
The PBR-001 can also easily be customized. For example, a lip can be added to your shelves to prevent roll-off or round stock material. If you mount your wood rack closer to the ceiling, the bottom rack can be customized to provide great locations for hooks to organize power cords or power tools.

You can drill holes in custom locations to place arms differently. Directions say use a 3/32 bit... wrong, you need 5/32. Also, be careful where you place your custom holes so you don't interfere with the mounting spacers/bolts.
I used 1/4x2" wood lag bolts to mount into 2x6s and it worked great. Line them up and drive one lag.. If you have three sets of these lined up you need to make sure they are perfectly level with each other so your lumber won't rock like a seesaw, or sag in the middle.. While you have one lag in you can bang the top or bottom with a hammer to get almost 1/8" of adjustment. Then drive the other two lags. You need 6 bolts per set. If you aren't hanging anything too heavy you could get away with 2, top and bottom holes. A second set of hands would have been nice to hold these when mounting but if you are handy you can do it yourself.
I now up to 5 sets and done. And I must say after a couple months of living with them I am quite pleased. The only broken pieces in my original review were in that one first set. The holes are still drilled too large for the support screws. Yet the horizontal pegs only sit on these screws, so they are held in place fine. I installed 3 racks 4 feet apart on a different wall. This was going to be for longer lumber. But once again 4 feet just seems to far if you are really going to load it up. So I bought one more set and spent them every 2 feet on this wall as well. At 2 feet each level will hold 12 2x4s no problem. You seem to be able to fully load each space with lumber at 2 feet apart and it feels strong. Of course I'm using for framing lumber like spruce and pine. Have not loaded with anything like oak or maple yet. I've been using a level to check the pegs. 2 feet apart u feel safe they will not fall. 4 feet apart I was just a little nervous as the rack fully loaded just felt springy. Note they may have changed manufacturers. I was paying $60 a set. Last set was $75 and it is pained more red than orange. Same spacing. Same quality. But definitely redder and higher quality paint.
Note that the package does not come with wall mounting hardware (except for the spacers that go between the black bar and the wall). Make sure you buy the right hardware for the type of wall you are installing on. You will need 6 lags or anchors 1/4" thick.
