Benedict Darwin and his niece are the ones to have first encountered these wolves, and now, in "The Storm Guardians," they hope to save the An-Ki from enemies modern, ancient, evil, and ruthless. Unfortunately, Benedict and Arianna get little time on the page in this one, and we follow multitudes of other characters caught up in the melee. Set in the near-future, worldwide forces are using banking, government, military, and religion to manipulate the masses for their own purposes. On the fringes, there are those who love Adonai, the Creator, and they join forces to resist this coming evil. In so doing, they encounter the An-Ki, but also much more. Their meeting at the Revere house puts them squarely in the sights of their enemies, marked for elimination.
While these near-future events are going on, Zimmer weaves in a completely epic battle of supernatural forces in Purgatorian, where dark and light Aishim face off with various creatures in the ranks, demonic and angelic. These scenes have a scale beyond most of what is found in fantasy, and they parallel in many ways the battle going on in the forests, cities, and byways of Earth. There are layers upon layers here, and this sprawling scope is one of the series' strengths. It is also one of the huge obstacles readers must overcome, perhaps putting off some who have a hard time keeping track of the dozens of characters, races, creatures, and storylines, with sometimes a hundred pages or more going by before a return to a previous storyline. That said, those willing to dig in and explore this world that is at times hugely original or eerily familiar will be rewarded. Zimmer is putting together a completely prescient, prophetic, and creative series.
The forces from the Abyss have marshaled themselves against the souls of the Middle Lands. Fallen avatars and their horde are prepared for battle as the Night Hunt pursues the An-Ki in the real world. The Nephilim have been pulled through time and space to aid in the Hunt as the Convergence seeks to advance its worldwide agenda. Benedict Darwin and his entourage of high-school students find themselves at the apex of events that have far reaching consequences. Consequences that splinter souls in the real world and in those beyond.
Stephen Zimmer's second volume of the Rising Dawn Saga is an intense, pulse raising story that will sweep the reader into fantastic worlds populated by incredible beasts, villainous and noble people and heart shattering events that are truly nail bitters. Zimmer's richly developed characters have their own secrets which spices the storyline like a fine vintage wine. This author has the knack of bringing the spiritual conflict of Heaven and Hell into a fantasy and science fiction setting so believable that the reader is compelled to keep turning the pages. Simply put, Zimmer makes it real which is truly the mark of a gifted storyteller. The descriptive narrative is so convincing that the reader will never look at werewolves and fallen angels again in the way they have been portrayed all these years. The expanding conflict first begun in The Exodus Gate takes the reader up several notches on the intensity chart in this second book. The only down turn to this whole novel is waiting for the next installment. Zimmer's Rising Dawn Saga has classic written all over it! -- Steven Fivecats, Editor
