The crew of the Celia take on a passenger as a favor. The young teenaged girl needs to go home after spending five years at college to become a teacher. The five member crew all take a liking to her, but eventually, some things about her just do not make sense.
Why does she know how to pilot a starship? Where did she learn superior martial arts? How is she able to get others to do what she wants? What other 'abilities' does she have, that she can't explain?
As for other members of the crew: The ship's engineer, Sean. He's awfully quite and polite. The security officer is a ex-marine gunnery sargeant that likes to bully everyone she meets, and has a romantic crush on the captain, Merideth, who is married to the pilot.
Then there's the almost-a-doctor and ship's cook. He has some serious secrets. For one, he's wealthy but hiding it from the rest of the crew. The pilot, Linc, is a former counselor, but married the captain and followed her into space when she bought her own cargo ship. Linc can fly really well. His take-offs and landings leave something to be desired, though.
Captain Merideth is a former Navy Captain who lost her ship in battle, where she sustained serious back injuries that prevented her from her Navy career, so she bought her own freighter starship.
Things happen between these six folks that make this story one of the most intriguing stories I've read in a while. They all have secrets to hide. Secrets that will tear a well functioning crew of friends, to shreds.
I really enjoyed this book. It's very well written, with just a few small typos. The characters are very well fleshed out. They all have interesting backgrounds. Some of the revelations will bring you to tears. There is some violence and action, but the real story is in the character-driven tale.
The setting could just as easily been in the present time, rather than on a starship. I'm reminded of a disfunctional 'Firefly', or a real blood and guts episode of Star Trek. You won't be sorry if you buy this book. It's a winner!
I'm really disappointed that there is no sequel... yet. The ending is good, but there is definately room for one or two more books here. One can only hope!
I can't recall a book where the characters are so thoroughly fleshed out and compelling as in Stormcrow. What a completely delicious story! Don't take my word for it, download a sample and then get ready to be sucked in, chewed up, and spit out on the other end of the book.
I immediately purchased this book after reading The Kid, a short story by this author.
read if for free with kindle unlimited but bought it anyway so I'd always have it

The plotting and characterization is about as good as it gets. There are a few typos, not serious.Read more
