Apart from this, this novella has not much going on for it. Rhythm is a bit slack, but the main problem are the two leads who are neither very likeable nor relatable.
They'd been together seven years now, with Jesse, 35, leaving often for a work trip, undercover, never knowing how long he'll be gone or where he went. These guys are middle aged and each full well knew what they were getting into. Dan, 42, financial adviser, has reached his limit, when Jesse springs another mission for the next week. Jesse broke his promise - no more missions he may or may not come back from. Jesse leaves, then comes home in bad shape after one year+ later, he finds Dan has been dating Mickey for 6 months. His friends all agreed that he wasn't treating Dan right. He goes to his buddies veterinary business and adopts Norman, a black collie with attitude. When he sees Dan, each knows their love is still there. Jesse was such an ass to Dan all through the years, but did love him, and loved his job, helping people. Jesse stays away, but Dan shows up at his door one night. (There is no cheating.) Dan hasn't been happy with Mickey like he was with Dan.
This is a smooth flowing novella with our feelings on a rollercoaster ride. There's hot lovin' and anger and questions.
It holds our attention and does leaves us happy.
I don't like the type of story where there is infidelity in deed or even in thought, I am a bit of a purist and love the sanctity of relationships. So I find parts of this story teeth grittingly frustrating. In fact my favourite character in the book is Norman, the dog. And that is closely followed by Hazel and Bob, also dogs. We meet other couples from previous books and there are starting to be quite a number to keep track of. However, if you can't decide to commit to who you are sleeping with or go back to an ex who has flaws and has, through his line of work, cheated on you, then shouldn't you at least stop sleeping with the new man until you are sure? If your new man wants to live with you and marry you but you would rather go home to your religious parents who don't accept you (gay or vegetarian) then isn't it time to stop and think?
Really wanted to love this book but parts of this were like licking ice cream with dog hair in it...not conducive to enjoyment. It is worth a read for the dogs, they are cute in their antics...and I am a cat person!
The thing about this story that I also didn't like was this was from Jesse's point of view and nothing from Dan and there was entirely too much of Evan and Peter in this story. There really wasn't a lot of Jesse and Dan time except at the beginning and towards the end. Where was all the romance at? The reconnection between the two of them except at the end. The end of this story was a little strange like maybe there will be another one about these 2 after Jesse goes back to work for this Organization..Dan thinking Jesse won't be out in the field anymore...somehow I think something is going to happen and there will be issues coming between them again that is if there is another story like there was about Peter and Evan. We will have to wait and see!
