Editorial Reviews

So here we have Storms, an instrumental rock / post-rock band that formed in Zagreb, Croatia in early 2009 from the roots of those innovative Croatian groups such as Don't Mess With Texas, Amok, Nikad, Radio Free Isaac and Lunar, among many other Croatian indie / hardcore / punk bands. When Don't Mess With Texas disbanded, three members continued playing music as Storms, consisting of Slobich (bass guitar), Sasha (guitar) and Neven (drums). So far, they released a self-produced demo and continued to furiously work on what became their debut full length entitled We Are Storms, now released exclusively on vinyl by Moonlee Records in May 2011. Who needs CDs anyway? You can't misplace an LP so easily... But hey, that doesn't mean we forgot about digital youth amongst you! This time the band came up with something truly innovative Storms posters with unique codes for immediate download of the full album, which are a release on their own. Don't forget where this idea originated once you see these popping out everywhere! Allright. We Are Storms is a nice little collection of ten explosive all-instrumental compositions, ranging from dreamy melodies and emotional breaks to guitar madness and pumping bass riffs, backed up by a noisy atmosphere and driving, open drum rhythms. Pretty interesting and straightforward music, if we may add no endless intros or boring soundscapes that go nowhere and make you say "are they gonna start playing now?" just direct, in-your-head tracks that rarely go past the four minute mark. Post-rock at it's best. You dig the new Mogwai record, just to make a realistic comparison? Then you will LOVE Storms! And if you ever listened to Crass, you will immediately see where these guys are able to take their influences from one of the tracks is named "Nineteen Eighty Bore", but that's just the tip of the iceberg instrumental music doesn't always mean no text at all, no the record sleeve offers a good deal of interesting material which explains the meaning behind the songs and gives a nice perspective on band's political stances. A plenty of ways to let Storms blow you away in their direction! The album has been recorded in the famous studio Kozmo in July 2010, with big help from Mijo of Analena fame and Mihael from Peach Pit. Sasha mixed the record, and Carl Saff applied his wizardry and mastered the final mixes. Cover design was handled by 5L081CH.6R4PH1C5 & Storms, and the band went totally DIY, made the stamps and did all the covers by themselves. So, to sum it all up Storms are a mighty band that will yet be widely heard of while rumbling across the stages, and Moonlee Records has another fine release in its catalogue, this time vinyl only + unique posters with download codes. Listen and enjoy there's no alternative anyway it's always been hard to predict where the Storms are heading next!
