If you're looking for a book to show you how to create and pitch an idea in the modern storytelling marketplace, this is the one. Easy to read and straight to the point, this book guides the reader through steps to create meaningful and deep stories with the intent of pitching them to commercial interests; read: getting paid to produce them. The authors' Hollywood experience shows in each page letting the reader know what the people buying the stories are looking for. The most interesting thing I found as I read the book was that it didn't focus on narrative, but the deeper ideas on why you tell a story. Also the striking idea that genre doesn't matter. If you have a good idea for what is driving the story you can then create a compelling narrative for any genre. It really opened my eyes to a new way of creating stories. I can't wait to apply what I have learned in reading it to my own writing.

Although short and a promotion for a commercial business, this handbook helped me think about how to differentiate the "message" of a story from its narrative, in order to flesh out the underlying story. A worthwhile read for any fiction writer, although its geared more for screen writers.

Great ideas are brewing over at SEAM's online community, and it's clearly evidenced in this snappy and invaluable book. Here, SEAM's creators present realistic and hard-earned perspectives on the creative life, and explain the increasing importance of thoughtful story design and collaboration. While the book is geared mostly to screenwriters, storytellers of any medium can glean priceless insights into how to appropriately approach a creative project, present it to collaborators and gatekeepers, and see it through to completion. A terrific read.
