In this unique publication, Marilyn and John Neuhart tell the story, to paraphrase Charles Eames himself, of how Eames furniture got to be the way it is. The Story of Eames Furniture is a biography ―not of an individual person, but of arguably the most influential and important furniture brand of our time. Brimming with more than 2,500 images and insider information, this two-volume book in a slipcase sheds new light on the context in which the furniture of Charles and Ray Eames was created. It documents in unparalleled detail how the design process in the Eames Office developed as well as the significant roles played by specific designers and manufacturers. Volume 1 presents the early years of the Eames Office and its method of furniture design and development. It introduces not only Charles and Ray Eames, but also key members of their design team including Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Herbert Matter, and others ―a widely diverse group of people who did the day-by-day work on the furniture projects and who together ultimately turned contemporary design in a new direction. This volume also focuses on Charles Eames’s early work with plywood and how he adapted plywood-molding techniques into a system to mass-produce furniture. Volume 2 features the period from the aftermath of the Second World War through 1978, the year of Charles Eames’s death and of the effective, functional end of the Eames Office. By explaining the pioneering industrial processes used with innovative materials such as fiberglass, wire, and aluminum, it provides incomparable insight into how new technologies served as the genesis for the most interesting pieces of Eames furniture. This volume also focuses on the role of the Herman Miller Furniture Company in the evolution of furniture design at the Eames Office and investigates the influence of Don Albinson, who was Charles Eames’s primary designer and technician from the mid-1940s to 1960. The Story of Eames Furniture celebrates Charles Eames’s vanguard cultural achievement of giving modern society the opportunity of materializing its identity through furniture design that, even today, still tops bestseller lists and has not lost any of its original elegance, timelessness, freshness, and quality.

Review

We ought to be grateful that instead of the hagiography we might
expect of such a sumptuous book, it presents the warts-and-all view
from inside the studio... By giving the Eames Office rank and file
their curtain call, it usefully explodes idea of the designer as a
solitary genius, which has always been a myth. --Justin McGuirk, The Guardian

A good old-fashioned design book... The result is a design geek s dream. Packed with information and insights on the development of every piece of furniture produced by the Eames Office, it is filled with product shots, technical drawings, advertisements, magazine and newspaper clippings, snapshots, profiles of the Eames s collaborators and employees, and anecdotes. --Alice Rawsthorn, The New York Times online edition

This book has been put together with almost the same attention to
detail as a piece of Eames furniture! --Jasper Morrison

This is my favorite design book of 2010. Yes, it's huge!...The quality and quantity of records is extraordinary. --Bill Moggridge, Director of Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum

This book has been put together with almost the same attention to
detail as a piece of Eames furniture! --Jasper Morrison

About the Author

The Story of Eames Furniture was written and designed by Marilyn Neuhart together with her husband John. Both have worked with the Eames Office in various capacities from the 1950s until 1978, the year of Charles Eames s death. In working with Charles and Ray Eames for over 30 years, and having the extraordinary opportunity to be in close proximity with the members of the Eames Office and their patron manufacturers, Marilyn and John Neuhart have absorbed their stories and meticulously portrays the history and development of Eames furniture. This book is a firsthand account of the Eames Office from within and based on recollections of the Neuharts and those who worked closely with Charles Eames. More familiar with the material and protagonists than almost any other, Marilyn Neuhart has spent the last 15 years compiling the stories, images, and recollections featured in this book.

This book in two vols., has been researched, documented with amazing photos and clearly indicates and reflects the mood of the times in America in the mid-century.

As a research tool it is invaluable, as an architect or designer you will learn how the Eames office actually worked, and that the myth of Ray and Charles is not what many historians would have you believe as the God and Goddess of modern design.

It seems Saarinen, Bertoia, Ain and Albinson designed, refined and were given little if no credit for the entire line of funiture of the Eames, whereas Charles Eames had his focus on women, photography (lots of close-ups), and basically taking credit for all the work done at the 901 Washington Blvd., Venice building.

I cannot put the book down, perhaps the best design book I have bought in many years.

A beautiful work and many thanks to the authors, designers Mr. & Mrs. Neuhart for setting the record straight!

I love this book. I bought it from amazon several years ago but forgot to review it. I read the recent negative review and didn't experience any of the problems listed in that review. It is a very heavy book that actually is split in two books that comes in a sleeve.

To this day I believe Marilyn and John Neuhart wrote the best Tell-All story with their awesome book – THIS one. The Story of Eames Furniture Hardcover – September 22, 2010 by Marilyn Neuhart (Author), John Neuhart (Author) - She and John gave credit where credit was due, especially when Charles Eames never acknowledged or credited any of the important designers who had worked at the Eames office and who gave so much of their time and effort in designing and creating so many things – every single thing that helped put Eames onto the design world. The Neuharts provided photos and historical biographies of each of the important designers who had contributed so much to the office – of which Charles had so conveniently brushed aside and basically took all the credit for all the pieces that were ever produced. The Neuhart's book is an honestly detailed history and true events of which needed to be told and set straight.
In one of the biographies, Don Albinson whom I personally believe to have been one of the most important designers to ever set foot into the Eames office and who pretty much was THE man who single handedly designed and made the world-famous Eames 670 lounge chair for Charles. Marilyn and John couldn't have said it better in their own words in this book by telling it like it was. It was so refreshing to read so many untold stories about what went on in the Eames office.
The only unfortunate thing about reading this book was that of my loss of respect for Charles. Sad to say but it has become a love-hate situation for me after reading this untold history - Love the real history but hating the truth about the hidden details of Charles whom I once admired.
Although this set can be expensive, it was worth every penny for me. It is a beautiful set of two heavy coffee table sized books chronologically written and all the details about everything we needed to know. Just absolutely amazing.

Despite of one negative reviewer about this set of books, of which her first complaint was not being able to hold up the book while reading (never known anyone to HOLD a heavy coffee-table size book while reading… but ok, whatever!) and who reviewed the books as though she knew more about the Eames office than the Neuharts. It's one thing to have the Neuharts who were there during the time period and personally knew the Eameses and the staff to tell the stories, and it’s another to have a reviewer of accusing Marlilyn for trying to "re-write history.". Perhaps it's great to have someone tell the "REAL" behind the scene stories of what really happened and who should have been credited as well as setting history straight about the Eameses. The world of so-call Eames historians tried for so long to project the innocent image of Charles Eames. It is worth buying and reading up on the untold history.
For this particular reviewer to be using the word “Problematic” to describe a book, pretty much says everything about this person. But I digress.
This book set is worth it and I may get another set just to have and extra one. Unfortunately, no compensation given for promoting this Must-Read book ☹

Stunning. This book provides the most comprehensive, gossipy, and behind-the-scenes overview of life in the Eames studio that I've ever seen. At first, the massive (it's HEAVY!) two volume series seems almost too massive to digest, but Marilyn Neuhart's writing is conversational, almost casual, and goes by fast.

It's a delight to read the profiles of the other, lesser-known designers - many of whom appeared to be the real stars behind some of the most famous chairs. Each section is fabulously detailed with an abundant number of photographs, drawings, grids and workshop photos. This beautifully packaged book is real keeper. And even though it's expensive, I may just buy another (or two) as a holiday gift for my designer friends.

the book has to be read flat & is almost impossible to read due to its weight and binding .
the pictures whereas numerous are uneven - important ones are small unimportant ones large
many covering 1 & 2 pages for no reason.
Neuhart is determined to re-write history or as she says on EVERY page correct history
and inform everyone how Ray Eames contributed nothing and in fact was an obstacle
to the office , projects & people.
Charles was a self promoter , treated employees poorly & gave no credit to all the people who actually did
all the work.
The book is very problematic on numerous accounts and not convincing .
There is a far more articulate review by Alexandra Lange that covers these issues.
