Story of a Girl Taschenbuch – 1. Januar 2008
Kaufoptionen und Plus-Produkte
I was thirteen when my dad caught me with Tommy Webber in the back of Tommy's Buick, parked next to the old Chart House down in Montara at eleven o'clock on a Tuesday night. Tommy was seventeen and the supposed friend of my brother, Darren.
I didn't love him.
I'm not sure I even liked him.
In a moment, Deanna Lambert's teenage life is changed forever. Struggling to overcome the lasting repercussions and the stifling role of "school slut," Deanna longs to escape a life defined by her past. With subtle grace, complicated wisdom, and striking emotion, Story of a Girl reminds us of our human capacity for resilience, epiphany, and redemption.

Bewertet in den USA am25. Juni 2013When Deanne was thirteen, her father caught her having sex in the backseat of her brother's friend's car. Since then, Deanne's father won't look at her, or really talk to her, and she's been labeled the school slut. She wants to escape her house and her town, and she thinks she has found the perfect solution in helping her brother, his girlfriend, and their infant daughter move into their own place. But over the course of the summer, Deanne learns that running away from one bad situation doesn't fix the real problem, and that forgiveness can come in unexpected places.
Story of a Girl is a short novel that really packs an emotional punch. Deanne's struggles to not let her past decisions and mistakes define her and prove to everyone around her that she isn't the girl they believe her to be is full of many painfully awkward encounters and a few small, triumphant moments. Zarr explores the restlessness and urge to be independent that so many young people feel, making the point that while moving away may give you a new perspective, it won't solve your problems. Deanne's feelings of displacement and isolation--at home, with her friends, and at school and work--are so relatable, and her family dynamics extremely well-drawn and emotional, verging on painful to read about. This is a great novel about moving on, forgiving, taking second chances, and going your own way. Story of a Girl is a quick read that will demand to be read in one sitting.

Bewertet in den USA am22. Juni 2011My feelings on this book are mixed. I really enjoyed it. It's probably up there with John Green. It tackles some difficult issues and it does it without seeming melodramatic. But a few characters are underdeveloped and I could do without the poems/vignettes Deanna wrote at the beginning of a few chapters.
Story of a Girl follows sixteen-year-old Deanna who has a reputation for being the town slut. However, Deanna has only been with one guy, Tommy, her brother's drug buddy who happened to be seventeen when she was thirteen. Tommy spread his side of the story so now the whole town knows. And her father caught her in the act. What could be worse you ask? Oh, her brother had a kid with his girlfriend, and her only two best friends, Jason and Lee, are dating. Life definitely sucks for Deanna.
To make things worse, she gets a job at a pizza place that Tommy works at. Her Dad still hates her. And things are awkward with her friends because she has a psuedo-crush on Jason.
Yes, sucks to be her. But she doesn't do all the self-pitying that I hate in YA. She gets over it and manages to get over her problems. Sure she cries a lot, but people do that. She gets herself together and talks about her issues. God, I hate when people don't communicate. This book pretty much handles all those awkward things instead of running away from them. And it doesn't do them in a disgusting way. Most of the plot lines were interesting. I was worried about her boss, Michael, turning into a stereotype. But he narrowly managed to avoid it.
Now her friends were a bit underdeveloped. I would have liked to see more of them. The fact that they play a pretty big part of the story, but are only two dimensional kind of annoys me. I would have liked the father to come around a bit sooner. I did like how the teen pregnancy was handled, and how she settled things with Tommy. You can't hold a thirteen-year-old responsible for that sort of stuff. Especially when the guy is 4 years older than her. Sex was handled pretty maturely in this. None of it was gratuitous. There wasn't that much cussing either. Nor was their any alcohol, but they were smoking pot. I'd suspend my belief on this, but they were in some backwater town north of California, though it felt like they were in the suburbs of Seattle. I guess because this reminded me of Twilight in a way. Only a million times better. Deanna is like everything Bella isn't.
I'd say 3.75 stars on this. It was better than a Elizabeth Scott book. It was better than The DUFF. I'd even say it was better than half of the books Sarah Dessen has written. The writing was a bit weak at times, but over all it was pretty good. It was melodramatic at times, but quickly pulled back. I'd check out another Sara Zarr book anytime.

Bewertet in den USA am23. Januar 2012I had high hopes for this book, but nd I have to admit when I started reading it my first impression was that it was a bit slow. This took me longer to read than most books, because every so often I would get bored with it. I think for me, I like books that are plot-driven, and this really is not. It's very introspective, and it's nice to really get into Deanna's head, but in my opinion it makes for kind of a slow read.
Although I felt like a lot of the relationships depicted in the book were raw and really realistic, I kept feeling like the relationship between Deanna and her father was a little too over the top to be believable. I felt like they should have made more progress in their relationship in three years, especially since Deanna seems not to have put a foot wrong in those three years. Since they were so close before the incident when Deanna was thirteen, it felt a little off to me that their relationship would break down so completely and just stay broken for years.
In contrast, I thought Deanna's relationship with her brother was very authentic, and I loved the book's portrayals of her friendships with Lee and Jason. Zarr does a wonderful job in portraying the ups and downs of friendships - especially the difficulties of trios - and I liked the way the relationships between Deanna, Lee and Jason grow and change throughout the book. Zarr definitely has a great understanding of how teenage relationships work, and it was nice to see such a real depiction of that.
I did like the messages that Story of a Girl communicated, about how stifling life in a small town can be, and the injustice of how one poor choice in your past can completely change how you are perceived by your peers. Story of a Girl makes the reader really think about the importance of reputation, and examines just how misleading a person's reputation can be.
Story of a Girl was, for the most part, an interesting read and an honest, gritty depiction of small town life. It's not a light read and it's not meant to be. It definitely carries an important message to teens, in a way that might actually reach them. It wasn't a personal favorite of mine, but it's a book that has value and I can see why it has so many good reviews.
