'A simple but richly imaginative tale in a tiny book with exquisite illustrations ... An old-fashioned delight for new children.' -- Kirkus Book Reviews 'This reissue of a German fairytale from 1905 is a beautiful little book with gorgeous Mabel Lucie Atwell style illustrations. It contains everything you need in a Christmas story: ice castles, fairy-children, and snowmen waiters ... The magical illustrations tell the story perfectly.' -- Families Magazine, December 2012 'An utterly delightful wintry tale full of whimsy, sprinkled with magic and sparkling with charm ... a perfect stocking filling, especially if you can conjure up some snow for Christmas morning.' -- Playing by the Book, September 2012 'This is a beautifully illustrated and magical tale. A wonderfully enchanting book, a pleasure for children to read and the children listening really did sit open mouthed. The perfect book for a winter's day.' -- Hilary with Isaac (5) and others, Education Otherwise, December 2005 'Poppy's visit to the Snow Queen is told in a comforting manner likely to appeal to the younger listener; the very quaintness and period feel of the pictures add charm and interest. Von Olfers' illustrative style is decorative, with snowdrop panels bordering each page and patterned scenarios of icicles and frost flowers that will captivate viewers of all ages.' -- Gillian Lathey, School Librarian, Winter 2005 'Another delightful seasonal book for young children.' -- Kindling, Autumn 2005 'This magical fairy tale has beautiful plate-style illustrations. A timeless gift.' -- Family Interest magazine, November 2005

I love the nature metaphors and waldorf-y pagan tones. The metaphors leave a bit of room for interpretation and discussion as the kids get older, making it appropriate for both young kids and older ones at the same time.
My kids are 4 and 2. This story is the right length. Not too long, not too short. It holds the attention of both without boring them.
Side note: Be sure to read the description of the copy being sold. The copy I received is a small one, just FYI. The small one is the only one that has been available for close to a year now on Amazon (as of Dec. 2013) so if you want the larger book or ones that match the other Von Olfers' stories, you may have to look elsewhere.
This version of the book is smaller than the other Floris books we own though. Not a huge deal since this is a harder story to find but we do prefer the large versions of these books and will repurchase in the full size once I find it.
Please note that this is a mini-edition.
I plan to return it for a full sized edition because the illustrations are so wonderful. One of our favorites!
