[update] In the last heavy snow storm, this product broke. It's clearly not able to take the abuse that a shovel is intended for.
You might think, "I'll just buy multiple units and replace when they break. They're that cheap!"
Don't be fooled. These are VERY cumbersome to install and reinstall - impossible with gloves. Of course, these will break in sub-zero temps while you're 200 ft from the house. What then? It's already midnight and all you want to do is clear the mailbox. Time to shop for a different product.
There's no magic here. To understand how this works you just have to think about how you lift snow shovel when you shovel. Typically, your dominant hand will be at the back of the handle, and your weak hand will be under the middle of the handle. Your weak hand is "lifting" as you push down and swing with your dominant hand. This means you are "cradling" the weight with your weak hand, which engages your back and shoulder muscles.
By switching the leverage point to this bar, you can "isolate" your weak side muscles and better use your whole body to pivot the shovel. While this doesn't make shoveling a ton of snow easy, by any means, I found that it reduced the strain that was being places on the cradling muscles. It basically let me stiff-arm the shovel, which made it easier to engage my lower body muscles in the unpleasant task of clearing my driveway repeatedly.
It still took a considerable time to clear the snow, however my back wasn't ever really sore because I didn't have to bend over as far to handle the shovel. So I don't think this saved much time, but certainly saved a lot of aching once the job was done. It's not for everybody though - I let my neighbor borrow my shovel and he didn't like the backsaver grip at all (not sure why).
The item is well built and feels sturdy once attached to the shovel. It is made of plastic, so I'm not sure if it will get brittle & break if left outside in the extreme cold - I just keep mine in the utility room. Overall I like this product and would purchase again.
It felt a bit awkward initially on a lightweight 'snowplow' shovel which is used to first move/push and then lift. And, if you've shoveled a lot of snow before, initially pay attention to the balance of the weight if you throw snow sideways.
One snow season down with no problems. I felt like I was 'cheating!'
