Dispelling the myths:
1. NEVER USE SOAP OR PUT IT IN THE DISHWASHER. IT WILL RUIN IT!!!
2. Coffee/condensation will build up on the inner part of the lid. That is normal. When you lift the lid, some coffee might spill onto the stovetop. THAT IS NOT A LEAK!!! It is gravity pulling the liquid from the lid to the ground.
3. Handles only melt if you let the heat from the stovetop melt it. Always make sure the heat is not directly below the handle, otherwise it will melt. If you have a gas stove like mine, the diameter of the flame should not be larger that the bottom of the heating vessel or chamber. If you have a coil or ceramic stovetop, the handle should not be over the heating element.
Overall this is a great espresso machine that is at a great price point!
UPDATE: My handle melted. Why? Because the pin holding it in place broke and the handle lowered and made contact with the metal. So it melted. I tried to contact MateoJo by calling and emailing them. Nothing. No response. No callback. Not even an auto reply email. Its been months and nothing. So I don't use it and I now use a single serve black & decker coffee maker. I love that thing. So, overall, its a good product while it lasts and MateoJo's customer service is less than desirable.
There seems to be a big quality issue here. Some people love this product and have no issues, and other people seem to find that the product tanks and is horrible. Unfortunately, I'm one of the horribles!
First, I knew I was in trouble when the box for the espresso maker was in complete shatters in the Amazon shopping box. There was no appearance of attempting to assemble the box.
Second, when I got it I opened it and it looked like the silver coating was pitting or chipping. I ran my hand around the inside of it and silver flakes ran off onto my hand and fingers. SEE PHOTO.
Third, when I opened the whole think up, now being suspicious, I discovered more pitting on the inside. And believe it or not there appears to be rust spots. RUST! It hasn't even been used yet! But what appears to have happened was the silver coating did not coat the entire inside chambers. During the shipping process from China to RI, it appears the product had an opportunity to rust. SEE PHOTOS.
Imagine what the rust will be once I start to use it!
Yes, the price is appetizing. But this is really a "you get what you pay for." I had been watching this one and the expensive and original Italian one, Bialetti, and honestly just go with the more expensive one for quality purposes. I don't know about you, but I don't want a dose of silver flakes from China and rust.
No thanks! Returning!
ORIGINAL Review: First off, I did NOT receive this at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion, I bought it at the regular price. With that said I'm completely happy with the moka pot! I own a few sizes of the traditional Bialetti pots but when I finally wore out the rubber gasket in my "6 cup" (really should say 6 espresso shots) pot I decided based on the funky packaging and great price of the MateoJo model to give it a shot rather than order a refurbishing kit.
While the quality and functionality of the pot are great there's really nothing special about it... most moka pots are created pretty much equal unless (gods forbid) the pressure valves stick, which is categorically not a problem with this one, at least after about 10 uses. I don't love the fact that it's made in China but that's the manufacturing center of the planet today so it's hard to avoid. More important are the value for the price (great) and the quality of service from the supplier (even better). MateoJo is a father and son shop and a lot of personal attention shows in the packaging and instructions that come with the product. One small note about the pot itself- it uses a silicone gasket instead of the typical Italian-style rubber one so I expect that it will be both easier to clean and a little more durable, which will be handy. All in all a great experience.
