The story starts with her having stowed away on a ship, thinking that she will be fine if she can just stay out of sight for a while. Of course, this doesn’t last long, and the policy aboard most ships of this type is to space stowaways, they don’t exactly have a good use, and who wants to feed them?
However, she is caught by none other than Bone Crusher, or as he is more commonly known ‘Crush’. Crush immediately senses something about this young girl in front of him, and rather than turning her over to be spaced, tells the crew that she is actually his, that she is his cabin-girl to help him, he bought her.
Things of course are never that simple in space, especially on a crew of less than savoury characters, and Ada soon finds that she has choices to make between this man who just saved her life, and the rest of the crew.
This is a fun story, especially if you have read the rest of the Kuiper Chronicles and know the various characters.
I would suggest that although this is listed as 0.25, that you read it after about book 2 or 3 so that you get the full effect of the story.
This is a really great short that gives you some real insight into both Ada and Crush and how they started out, and how and why Ada is the person she is in the later series. For Crush, well, we all know what and why he is, that’s why he is such a cool character in this series.
Definitely worth the read if you are into the series.
When you wrap this around the other 2 Starship Fairfax prequels, you have the makings of some great novels in the series. I award this short story 5 Stars.
