I'm not a rap fan by any stretch, but we decided to see it anyhow. We were both knocked over by the story, the music and the performances. This was a turbulent time in the U.S. (not that things have improved all that much) and NWA stood up against the powers that be to tell their truth about how African-Americans were being treated, by law enforcement and others in control. If vulgarity and the use of the N word (to excess, IMHO) really upset you, you will have an issue with the movie. But look past that and you'll find a movie that makes a powerful statement. I'm 71, but I always try to keep an open mind. In this case, it paid off.

Great movie

This movie is a great retelling of some famous cultural icons. If you loved nwa but knew very little of their background, this movie will give it to you.

My husband and I grew up in LA at that time. To see the movie brings up some memories of not so great times. I know the movie is more like a biography but there are some important historical events that we should never forget. Moved to tears in some scenes while laughing in others. The music is great especially with a sub woofer. But in the end all you really need to know is... bye Felicia!

The American Dream on Rap

Straight Outta Compton is the biopic for Rock & Roll Hall of Famers NWA who for better or worse depending on perspective helped bring rap music to the mainstream in the 1980s and early 1990s. As a matter of disclosure, rap music is not my favorite, I would rather get cavities filled then listen to it. That being said, I suggest that the rap averse population out there give Straight Outta Compton a chance because rap music is a significant element of American culture to many people.

I thought Straight Outta Compton did a really good job casting the story as one of American history in that the NWA’s rap emerged out of a very real perception of police brutality against African-Americans in LA. Then the NWA get famous and presumably rich except for the questionable behavior of a business manager and record executives. Viewed through this lens, Straight Outta Compton is really a story of injustice, greed, rebellion, friendship. Strip away the rap music and baggy clothes and it’s really a bona fide American Dream.

Comin' Straight Out!

I am a sucker for films based on famous musical acts and while I am not the biggest fan of Hip-Hop music I truly appreciate the messages that were being sent back in the days of its humble origins.

Unlike today this genre of music does not emphasize on the struggles of the community and the change and equality it hopes will emerge from these messages. 'Straight Outta Compton' is a story told with great pace, fantastic acting and some true moments that will resonate emotionally. Any fan of this group of artist will love the moments when the songs are written and performed in concert. I was actually surprised that this film did not get more Oscar buzz.

This is a film that I have already watched multiple times and am proud to have as a part of my collection.

Epic and Deep

This film went beyond my expectations. It's deep because the systemic violence that was happening in 80s continues to happen in this country. I think that's one of the main reasons the director chose to tell the story the way that he did. I understood the relationships between the artists in a much deeper way after seeing this movie. I do think more time could've been spent on East Coast artists Who influenced everyone, but then it would've been four or five hour movie. This movie should have received Waymore awards, and I'm still pissed off that it got snubbed at the Oscars.

The Best Movie of 2015!

This is one of the very few movies I wanted so bad to add to my DVD collection! This movie, IMHO should have been nominated for some other major categories besides Original Screenplay. Jason Mitchell, who played Eazy-E, was so believable in his portrayal of the Gangsta rap legend, should've at least been considered for a Best Actor nominee, but I won't go there!

The only downside of the DVD is that it's not the Director's cut, which also means there was 20 more minutes of the movie that wasn't seen in the theater. You have to get it either On Demand or buy the Blue-Ray version but you do have the usual extras, including hearing from the real Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren & DJ Yella & director F. Gary Gray.

Sure they didn't touch on some of the other controversies that surrounded the group, but also learning a lot from the record business and the dealings with a shady manager shouldn't overshadow what NWA meant to the music industry and society.
