Editorial Reviews

One of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to earn prominence since the 1980's. Though Sanborn has worked in many genres, his solo recordings typically blend jazz with instrumental pop and R&B. [Note: This product is an authorized CD-R and is manufactured on demand]

My first exposure to Sanborn was this album - a tape I played in my car 15 years ago. I'm glad. I saw him in concert at Pier 6 in Baltimore - I apologized to my date for the show. He said he was tired from the road - and I feel for him - it showed. I have other albums by David - and I just don't enjoy them. This one is pure gold though. If you like his joint effort with Bob James - Double Vision - you'll like this. I also recently got Secret - by Brian Culbertson - whose does another take on the song, Straight to the Heart, that is superb. If I had to choose one CD to have if I were trapped on a desert island - it would be this one or Double Vision. When he's good, he's very, very good...

Recorded by the "dean" of contemporary sax even before the term "smooth jazz" was in existence, this is the only "live" recording in David Sanborn's extensive solo catalog, "live" being that it was recorded before a studio audience in NYC in 1984 (and probably not without some "overdubs" with Sanborn being the studio perfectionist that he is). Sanborn was playing with the hottest NY studio musicians (being one of them himself at the time), Hiram Bullock and Marcus Miller, friendships forged on the NYC recording scene and no doubt while playing together in the Saturday Night Live Band and sit-ins with the Late Night With David Letterman bands. Marcus Miller was just a couple of years into the scene, with his signature tone and funky slap-bass solos on "Hideaway" and "Run For Cover" turning heads. The album features rearrangements of both of those tunes, earlier recorded on Sanborn's studio albums. A soulful rendition of Paul Simon's "Smile", originally recorded on Sanborn's sophomore effort back in 1977, climaxes into a frenzied trading of fours between Bullock and Sanborn. If you can find it, a black and white film of some alternate takes of this recording, titled, "Love and Happiness", is a real treat and shows the interaction between these top shelf musicians. I've recently bought this as a gift after having listened to hit endlessly in the late 80's. Listening to top selling smooth jazz saxophonists such as Kenny G., Dave Koz, Mindy Abair, and Candy Dulfer, this album is evidence of where they all get it from.

i've listened to alot of this man's work but nothing hits me like this album that he did with Marcus Miller.and yes they did a great job with Love&happiness.the cat that sung that song turned it out.he can sing but i still take Al Green.but it's close.one hundred ways got a good treatment.david sanbourne has done other covers of Als but it's magic on this one.i haven't really gotten into his work since this one however.this is the essential one to have for me.

When I started listening to jazz..the song 'Hideaway" on this CD was the first song I ever listened to. It was back in 1996, and I was 11 years old. I mean...come on...David on sax and M2 on bass? Can't beat that. You have other songs like "Smile", where Hiram Bullock does an amazing guitar solo toward the end of the song. My other favorites are "Run For Cover", "Straight to the Heart", both written by Marcus Miller, and David's beautiful cover of the classic "Lotus Blossom". And this CD's version of 'Lisa' is my favorite. You have to buy this CD...no questions asked. Just do it. You'll be happy you did.

This is easily my favorite David Sanborn album. It is better than his other popular album Backstreet!! It is easily worth the money. I've gone through three cassettes and never get tired of it. Many times coming back to the album and appreciating it even more.

I had the utmost honour of being an audience member during the live recording of this album in nyc (which was simultaneously filmed for video release) AND soon thereafter sat in the sixth row of a 700-seat theatre in ridgefield, connecticut to experience 2 back-to-back performances (during a snowstorm to end all snowstorms) where only 100 ticket holders were able to show-up to a theatre that, as a result of said storm, had lost its facility heating system. Dave and Band (yes, the original lineup from the live recording) came out and GRACIOUSLY played the entire set 2X (8pm and 10pm) note for note. The band, particularly Dave and Hiram B. (guitarist) had a laugh throughout as my entourage (we represented one-fifth of each audience) didn't sit still the entire 2 shows---and it wasn't due to the frigid theater, but, to our reaction to the most exhilarating concert experience I/we have ever witnessed. Some of the band members from this legendary recording are no longer with us, but this vivid musical experience is still so fresh in my mind all these decades later, that I encourage all readers to purchase this particular recording in any or all formats and to see Mr. Sanborn whenever he is in town. A true gem!

Best version of Run for Cover & my all time favorite recording, Love & Happiness,it's perfect. It's also the first time a vocal appears on a DS album.

I had this CD and something happened to it. Glad to have it back in my collection now. I have been listening to David Sanborn music since the early 1980's and have many more CD's to replace. I guess someone else became a fan when I use to travel so much.
