Editorial Reviews

Still living off the praise of fans, critics and peers as well as sales of last year s instant classic R.E.K.S (Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme), REKS now sets out to take the next step in his progression with his official full length follow up opus Straight, No Chaser. Once again teaming up with career long beatsmith Statik Selektah, the two combine like a modern day Gang Starr for Straight, No Chaser. 14 Tracks of pure hip hop featuring some of the strongest talent out right now Action Bronson, Slaine, Wais P The Pimp, Termanology and more!!! REKS has already set things in motion for Straight, No Chaser with applauded appearances at SXSW this year, an upcoming European tour and the recent leaks of the CD s buzz-singles, "Chasin " and "Autographs" which have found their way to every corner of the streets and internet alike. REKS took the underground scene by storm with his debut LP, Along Came The Chosen (2001). The album featured production from a then 18-year old Statik Selektah and featured collaborations with underground stalwarts: Pace-Won & Young Zee of the Outsiderz, 7L & Esoteric, J-Live and more. The critically acclaimed LP was nominated for Best Hip-Hop Album & Artist of the Year at The Boston Music Awards and was featured in the Source, XXL, Vibe, and URB Magazine's "Next 100." The album s single "Skills 101" reached #45 on the Billboard Singles chart, putting him on shows and tours with huge national acts. REKS finally released his highly anticipated sophomore LP, Grey Hairs, in 2008. The momentous album featured production from DJ Premier, Large Professor, DC The Midi Alien and ten-tracks from Statik and featured collaborations with Lil Fame of MOP, Consequence, Skyzoo, Termanology, Jon Hope and Big Shug. Grey Hairs lead to REKS being profiled by XXL Magazine in their "Show & Prove" section. REKS released the companion piece More Grey Hairs, appeared on Statik Selektah's Spell My Name Right: The Album and released two more mixtapes (In Between The Lines Series Vol s 1&2 which were hosted by Statik Selektah/DJ Green Lantern and DJ Ill Will respectively) and both mixtapes garnered thousands of downloads and widespread praise.

I been hearing alot about Reks lately, he's been getting alot praise so its only right I check out his music. The album starts off with "Autographs" which is a sick opening track, then on "Sit/Think/Drink" Reks gives thanks to his Mother and how he was glad didn't get a abortion after having him at 16 spitting "8/24/77 and the Heaven doors open up/thank God at 16 she ain't gon close it shut/cause an abortion at that age could of been expected" and "Momma that's real I thank you/cant do anything equal to the gift that life grant you" he also wants to relocate his family where he spits "I want y'all out the hood for good/bye bye bodega adios haters as it should be/f*** a could be or would be". Reks also kills it on "Powerlines but the guest on here that goes by the name of Easy-Money does a job as well where he says "Where live in a cold world/where nobody sends a postivie mess-age thats why its such a mess in this age". Other songs to check for are "Chasin", "Parenthood", "Lost in transition", & 730", and the rest of the songs on here are not bad they just don't compare to the ones I mentioned. As a first time listener of Reks I can say this album is dope, I give a 4 stars. This is one of those albums you have to be in a certain mood to listen to (not that it's a bad thing) because alot of the songs are heartfelt, full of emotion which is something thats missing from Hip Hop, props to Reks and props to Statik Selektah for the dope produtcion on here.

This is a nice smooth album with strong lyrics, scratching, and soulful & jazzy beats. The production is solely handled by Statik Selektah, delivering nicely samples beats with smooth drums with a steady atmosphere. Statik does not heavily rely on the sample, leaving more room for the lyricists to shine. Reks performs well with substance, relevance and deepness while toning down his flow a little bit, with a calmer delivery. His toned down flow works well with the production but the album as a whole, lacked some appeal and is less attention grabbing than his previous works. A solid release nevertheless.
