Product Description

Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, this raw, uncompromising [and] auspicious feature debut (Screen International) from filmmaker Matty Rich is a remarkable tale about hope, passion and consequence told honestly, powerfully and 'straight from the heart (Reader)! Dennis is sick of his dead-end life in one of Brooklyn's toughest housing projects. Seizing an opportunity to get rich quick, he convinces his two best friends to help him rob the localdrug lord. Amazingly, the plan goes off without a hitch, leaving these urban Robin Hoods thinking they ve got it made until a life-altering event proves to Dennis that the only way out of this urban war zone is either in an honest day's work or a body bag!

This is a really powerful and moving movie,it focuses on hardships of 1 family in particular that live in Brooklyn. The family has it's share of hardships, the father is really dealing with some racist peolle & he is depressed. They are broke in a bad neighborhood with poverty and crime. This movie is a real to life example of the struggles of people in the projects of Brooklyn. The son decides to rob a dealer and take his money so the family can escape to a better life. Everything goes wrong when that happens, the ending is really shocking. The man who plays the father has some of the best acting i have ever seen,he is totally immersed in his character. That role he plays is nothing short of perfect, the movie will leave you in a state of shock,it is just so sad what happens to the family. The son had good intentions and what he did has serious reprecussions,it is just a moving film that will really tug on your emotions.I feel bad even though it is a movie it is what i feel like is an accuraye description of life in the 60's in the projects with drugs, poverty, crime & racism still runs through the city. The father is a depressed stressed out alcoholic(but he has his reasons,i can feel the stress & tension) he beats his wife so bad that she gets fired and then he beats her again into a coma. Really sad movie but very powerful,it is a must see film that will leave you speechless. Sad movie but one of the most powerful performances ever. 6 stars.

I like Mattie Rich. He is a very good Director. However, I never liked this movie. I entails too much on the point that there is no way out for the African - American of the 60's and 70's. True we don't have a great past, and true we are the only race since the days of Nebekenezer that was forced to another land just to be enslaved, but it is clear that there is always hope for freedom in every aspect of life. Straight Out Of Brooklyn is a lie.
