Haunting classic. What a voice. Billie was. A troubled soul, had drug problems. I believe she was murdered, her death blamed on drug overdose and this powerful song must have contributed to her murder. She had real strength of character. What bravery to sing this back then!

Not for the faint of heart, but a chilling, goose-pimple inducing song about lynching in the Deep South. The "Strange Fruit" is the bodies of lynching victims swaying in the breeze. This song decried the lynchings and raised consciousness of it to Americans in other parts of the country. A very sad song; Billie Holiday made it one of her signature songs. One of the most important songs of the last century. How far we've come!

The lyrics to this haunting and disturbing song about lynching were written by a Jewish school teacher who was shocked when seeing images of a lynching. It has won numerous awards. Billie Holiday is not the only artists to sing this, but she is, in my opinion, clearly the best. There is something about the edge in her voice in this work that perfectly supports the theme.

Of course this song chills you to the bone. For one thing it's Billie Holiday, one of the greatest voices ever and then there are the lyrics. If you do not get goosebumps then you are not human.
