Editorial Reviews
2016 release, the sixth studio album from alt-rock band Garbage: Shirley Manson, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson and Butch Vig. Working initially in Vig's basement and then at Red Razor Sounds in Los Angeles, Garbage drew on a variety of sources, from their recent fan letters back to the albums they loved growing up. "The guiding principle was keeping it fresh, and relying on instinct both lyrically and musically", said frontwoman Shirley Manson. "Strange Little Birds is less fussed over than anything Garbage has ever made. We fell in love with immediacy", adds Vig. Some will hear echoes of Garbage s 1995 debut album in Strange Little Birds including Manson herself. "To me, this record, funnily enough, has the most to do with the first record than any of the previous records," she says. "It's getting back to that beginner s headspace. In part, she says, that s a result of not having anyone to answer to."

GARBAGE is a band that defies categorization (EXCEPT that they're EXCELLENT!!) What's heartening is that GARBAGE have always seemed to truly enjoy entertaining their fans, while having a great time themselves, performing together & just being in each others' company. A lot of marriages don't make it that long!!
This is the ONLY Band that I've listened to from very beginning (in their case: '94 to currently); my music attention-span is usually lots shorter! GARBAGE keep it vital and viable. They are the ULTIMATE truly gifted musicians! And, a 4th Member would have to be the Superior Editing and Mixing with the creative layering of Shirley's vocals!
Any GARBAGE fan will be reminded of earlier material, but just vaguely, on Tracks like "Empty" and "Blackout". Track 5 "Night Drive Lonliness" opening notes very, very broadly brings to mind "The World Is Not Enough", but not on such a Grand Scale, and Track 10 "Teaching Little Fingers To Play" almost completes a Chapter which "Stupid Girl" began. Only one less than stellar note: I contemplated a downgrade to a 4* review due to Track 4 "If I Lost You" which sounds like something Madonna would put out & Shirley sounds eerily too much like her on this...what were GARBAGE thinking on this one??! Toward the end or the song, there was a pause & I thought; here's where they'll lay some heavier tracks down, but, nope. I'm not taking away from my rating, though, for one small misstep in a career spanning 20 years (nobody's perfect & my hope is maybe I didn't listen closely enough to the lyrics & it was done "tongue in cheek").
STRANGE LITTLE BIRDS is GARBAGE at their Finest...for long-time fans to appreciate, as well as to indoctrinate an entirely new fanbase!!
With any band, you hope that they'll keep making music that brought you in, without making the same album over and over. I'm not a musician, but I imagine that's hard. Garbage manages to do it. You can tell as soon as you spin up Birds that the moody, atmospheric sounds are Garbage, with Shirley Manson's sweet vocal on top, but it's like hearing them for the first time. "Empty," the first single, is unmistakable Garbage, wonderfully dark and maybe even a little angry, but it feels more raw. Many of the other attracts make you wonder if they were listening to some combination of Nine Inch Nails and Jesus Jones (remember them?) until the influence rubbed off and made its way into the music.
Usually you don't associate simplicity with any music described as atmospheric, because of all the production that goes into such songs, but describing Garbage has always been hard. There are plenty of noisy guitars, but more interesting bass lines and harmonies. Many of the songs are longer than we're used to as well, something usually reserved for their live arrangements. "So We Can Stay Alive" is this brilliant journey of joy and loss, with stinging guitars, electronic sounds and a bass line that has to be seen live. It's like everything awesome about Garbage wrapped into a new package, in three acts (the second bridge is amazing), that makes you want to get up and cheer, right to the end.
This album deserves critical and commercial success. It might be a little dark in spots, but it's the brightest thing in music I've heard in a long time.
Regarding this album, some of it will need to depend on my mood. If I can just put headphones on and kick back, the diverse sound and songs are easily consumable. There are various electronic effects sprinkled throughout the album. Those nuances are best left to a relaxed environment.
We Never Tell and So We Can Stay Alive will be heavier in one-off rotation for me personally. Empty is very reminiscent of early Garbage. I'd say my favorite at this point is Teaching Little Fingers to Play. Overall, it is NEW Garbage!! Worth the buy.
