Product Description
Although this was director Lewis Milestone's only venture into the realm of noir, it remains a classic of the genre. The Strange Love of Martha Ivers stars Barbara Stanwyck as the title character, a tough, spoiled, willful heiress married to the local D.A., Walter O'Neil (Kirk Douglas), a weak-willed alcoholic. When old friend Sam Masterson (Van Heflin) suddenly returns to town after many years away, he approaches Walter to ask his help with the case of Toni Marashek (Lisabeth Scott), a friend who has been falsely accused of a crime. Sam is surprised, at first, to learn of Walter's marriage, knowing both of the parties, but quickly begins to put the pieces together. It turns out that Martha's tyrannical aunt (Judith Anderson), met an untimely end on the night that Sam left town, and Martha fears that Sam will reveal what he knows about that night, thereby destroying the lives of both she and her husband. Consequently, she begins to plot against Sam, who she also loves in her own twisted fashion. Every element seems perfectly in place in this typically guilt-saturated noir, with superb direction from Milestone, a memorable score by Miklos Rosza, and an outstanding performance by Kirk Douglas in his film debut.

Looking quite good in a new 4K HD scan, a big upgrade over the barebones 2005 Paramount DVD, now including an audio commentary by author and film historian Alan K. Rode, plus various theatrical trailers. Now that Kino Lorber has a deal with Paramount studios to release some of their films on Blu-ray and UHD, expect more titles in the near future.
In a short opening scene, the film shows the adolescent Martha Ivers trying to run away from her domineering aunt. She has two adolescent boys in her life, Sam, an adventurer who had been born to poverty, and Walter, the timid son of an ambitious tutor. When Martha kills her aunt by pushing her down the stairs the two boys and the tutor cover it up.
The film fast-forwards about 18 years as the grown Sam, a professional gambler, comes into town and finds Marth and Walter, who has become a lawyer and the town district attorney trapped in a loveless marriage. A complex, melodrama ensues. Sam and Martha have a smoldering attraction to one another while Sam also becomes involved with a young woman recently released from jail whom he finds smoking cigarettes and sitting on the steps of his old home. Martha and Walter share a guilty secret: they have framed an innocent man accused of killing the aunt and had him executed at the gallows. They fear that, somehow, Sam will expose their secret and they try various means to buy him or knock him off.
The film features the great actress Babrara Stanwyck as Martha. She has inherited her aunt's estate and added to her already great wealth. Stanwyck is beautifully dressed throughout this film, and as her character says never in the same dress twice. While Stanwyck is the center of interest, Kirk Douglas in his film debut as the alcoholic, weak Walter, Van Heflin as gambling Sam, and Lizabeth Scott as Toni Marachek perform convincingly. Mikos Rozsa captures the melodramatic story with his dramatic, loud score.
The film held my attention with its passion and violence and wild ending. There is sexual tension throughout the film that is unusual for a work of this time. The movie is in the public domain and is frequently shown at noir film festivals. It is worth seeing for Barbara Stanwyk and for its portrayal of the underside of American life. I felt fortunate to be able to think about Masters' "Spoon River Anthology" and about American town life again in the context of this film. "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" is highly over-the-top.
Robin Friedman
The new book about Masters which helped me think about this movie is "Spoon River America: Edgar Lee Masters and the Myth of the American Small Town" by Jason Stacy.
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers was quite a film with Kirk Douglas' first appearance in film and a very young Barbara Stanwick, whose fear and greed really drive the film.
Themes:
A young girl and a young boy both have a history of running away and again they get caught. The boy, Sam, escapes but the girl gets to confront her aunt and gets a slap across the face for her trouble by her scheming aunt.
The themes of fear of being caught, having to lie, cheat and steal to get ahead, permeate the script.
After a murder of her aunt, Martha grows up to inherit all property and money and ends up marrying Walter, a "scared little boy" who is now district attorney of Iverstown. Trouble is, Sam has returned, a victim of an auto accident. And boy, he really gets it!
Action:
As in any film noir, we have tough talk, threats and fists flying. This film was no different. Sam meets a blonde drifter fresh out of jail. Again the theme of betrayal as she makes up a story to get him "worked over" by the DA boys to scare him out of town. Sam doesn't scare easy.
Great lines:
"The only trouble with you kid is that you need a break!"
Martha Ivers: You've *killed* before, it's in your record.
Sam Masterson: *I* never *murdered*.
Bottom Line: Mistaken purposes, a blonde jail bird and some pretty tricky love triangles pepper a decent film noir. Moves slow at times and the surprise ending is a bit contrived, but the strong acting and a few fist fights save it! Recommended.

This is an entertaining film that is a little long but worth the watch. You know that it's not going to turn out well for someone.....but who....? The cast are all good although I think Lizabeth Scott sounds a bit weird on occasion. We are encouraged to follow the story by sympathizing with Van Heflin but does he make it out of Iverstown? The film starts well and gets you hooked into the story on a stormy night.
I've just watched the film again and I've had to take my mark down a star to 3. It drags.
BUT this DVD is taken from a very poor quality print, with blurred picture and crackling, hazy sound. I regret buying it, and wish I'd waited for someone to release a digitally remastered version.
YOU WILL NOT WANT THIS LASERLIGHT TRANSFER THOUGH, as it will probably be the worst you ever bought (unless you ever bought other LaserLight titles, because they are all excruciating to watch and listen to).
Please stay away from this, and bide your time, until another edition sees the light of day.
