Theoretically speaking, I shouldn't have enjoyed this book since I'm a guy, and we all know guys don't read "chick-lit". Yet to call "Strangely, Incredibly Good" chick-lit would be limiting its scope and appeal - it's much more.

The main character Cat is one of these people you immediately connect with - her fears, paranoias, past mistakes and pessimistic outlook on a life that's been so hard on her. Then she meets a genie from inside her Nintendo Wii, and life will never be the same again...

"Strangely, Incredibly Good" has a lot going for it from the off. Great characters, humour, adult conversations, and a sidekick in Gram that lights the book up even more whenever she's around. While funny and biting, though, the book also has some standout emotional moments (chapter eight, for example, leaves you breathless with its prose and punch to the heart).

It's this kind of emotional swing that makes the book so enjoyable. We know that life is never perfect; we know we make mistakes; we know we chase often-impossible dreams. The fact Heather Grace Stewart captures all these emotions so well in her tight debut novel shows a writer who knows her craft and audience.

An excellent first book, and hopefully the first of many in the adventures of Cat.

I just finished Heather Grace Stewart's Strangely, Incredibly Good and wanted to share what a great read I found it to be.

If you like a main character with plenty of depth, Cat is your girl. She's been through a lot and now finds herself single and lonely. Her weight is rising and her self-esteem plummeting. Too embarrassed to go to the gym, she works out using her WII gaming console until something strange and incredible happens. Maybe that's where the title of the book comes from. Who knows.

I hesitate to call the book a romance novel. It's sexy and fun. It has romance, yes, but also fantasy, time travel and a steamy moment in a castle in the Rhone Valley of France. But the characters and their struggles are very real and you'll find yourself rooting for them from the first page on. Gram was my favorite. She's the feisty grandma with a twitter account.

I've read some of the author's poetry and also her screenplay, The Friends I've Never Met. Heather's work reads with an ease and a style all its own. It's current, funny, quirky, sometimes tragic, and you'll remember it long after you finish.

If a book is billed as a Romantic Comedy, I'm expecting laughs amid all the (presumed) heartache. And I got them, in strangely, incredibly high numbers: our heroine, working one of Those Jobs and having survived one of Those Relationships, has perhaps the least likely love affair you can imagine, involving ancient magic, all-too-inaccurate time travel, and comes out of it, as you'd hoped she would, in a better place. It's a deeply funny book, without having to rely on stirring old jokes into the mix; Cat has the proverbial pocket full of wry, and you come to the end wishing you could get to know her better. (Fortunately, there's a sequel.)

There aren’t many people who could persuade me to read a romantic comedy. I write mainly fantasy and science fiction, with an occasional detour into erotica. I have to read the genres I write, to keep up with trends and ensure that I don’t accidentally parrot (or pirate) someone else’s idea. My “competitors” usually keep my reading stack quite full.

Well, the fellow who persuaded me to read “Strangely, Incredibly Good” didn’t even work at it. He’d just said he’d read it and had enjoyed it greatly. So, as I was temporarily saturated on F&SF, I looked it up at Amazon, and found myself thinking that for $0.99, it wasn’t much of a risk. Also, the idea of a genie being housed in a video game console rather tickled me.

Not to put too fine a point on it, this little novel is terrific. Heather Grace Stewart’s writing is sweet-toned without being at all cloying. Protagonist Cat is in 3D and Technicolor, and her costar Eugenius is as fascinating a concept character as I’ve encountered in any genre. Their adventures, powered by Cat’s ill-expressed wishes and Eugenius’s not-quite-all-that magic, are a wonderful combination of painful and playful, with a garnish of might-have-been thrown in at the climax.

Highly recommended, whether or not you read rom-coms for pleasure. Besides, what else can you buy for $0.99? Half a cup of plain decaf at your neighborhood Starbucks? Get three hours of reading pleasure instead.

I began reading (and loving) Heather Grace Stewart’s poetry several years ago, so I was delighted when I learned that she had published her first novel. I purchased the e-book and soon found myself pulling out my phone to read on buses, in lines, and wherever else an opportunity presented itself, eager to learn what would happen next in this sweet, funny, poignant tale of a struggling woman’s journey through wish fulfillment to actual fulfillment. I confess to both laughing out loud on occasion and shedding a few tears along the way (no doubt startling my fellow bus riders, line members, and other occupiers of shared spaces), and I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment in Cat’s story!
