I was surprised by how often couples who had been engaged, suddenly married as soon as the veteran returned. Sure, they wanted to move on with their lives but some vets, especially the POWs and Far Eastern POWs, had a lot of mental and emotional issues to be dealt with: survivor's guilt, feelings of humiliation and bitterness if a POW, PTSD. The Far Eastern POWs had serious physical health problems: malnutrition, malaria, dysentery, beriberi (lack of vitamin B-1, causing nerve disorders) and so on, but it was the psychological problems that were the worst.
