About the Author

It was during the course of a 9th grade creative writing class that I was struck by the writing bug. I'd only signed up for it because I wanted to be an editor on the school paper. Mostly because I'd hoped might give me the opportunity to interview the good looking student teacher in my drama class. I actually did get to do that interview, only I was so nervous I could hardly open my mouth! As an adult I realize he probably knew I had a crush on him... Anyway, thanks to the encouragement of another student teacher, Linda Marks, this one in the writing class I mentioned, I'm sitting here today. She instilled a love of creating stories that has given me great pleasure for most of my life. I'd always enjoyed reading, and still do. But there's just something so amazing about breathing life into characters. About creating a world where I control everything that happens. Usually. Sometimes it seems like the characters take over if they don't like where I'm going with the story though. Yeah, weird... But now I want to share them, and their stories, with you. And hope that you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

As a retired psychotherapist who specialized in trauma recovery, I was intrigued when I heard about this book. When I read the reviews I was confused. Obviously the reviewer who gave the book only one star did not read the blurb, much less the book. (On what planet would you consider this a sci-fi story and why would you expect a true story to have any ending other than the real one, happy or sad?)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered a traumatic head injury, has a loved one who has, or who works in the healthcare fields that deal with the physical and psychological recovery from these injuries. It is a poignant description of the struggles involved. Not only is your body and your life affected by such an injury, but your very personality is changed.

This is not the most well-written story out there but that is understandable since it was written during the two years Ms. James was recovering from a serious car accident. Since she is a well-established fiction author, I'm sure she could have later edited the story to smooth it out. But I'm glad she didn't because the raw words better convey what she was going through at the time, and show us how such an injury can rob us of our ability to think straight and our very sense of who we are.

The story is short but not an easy read (I read it in one evening). It does, however, end on a hopeful note as Ms. James shares those moments when she realized she was finding her motivation, her pleasure in life, and herself again.

2 years, 8 months and 16 days since my injury and this book is spot on with what I've experienced so far. Recovery is a long and lonely journey, but I still have hope I will be restored to the person I once was. Thanks for sharing, it's a story seldom heard.

This is the most enligntening, honest AND TRUE report on the happenings of "after the accident" I have ever read!
But this kind of treatment by Ins., Drs., police, customer "service" does not JUST happen to accident victims! I have a friend and I have my own treatment that goes along with what Kristy so gallantly reports in this book!! If you have MANY health problems that are not easy to SEE...then "they" just write you off or worse yet, send to on to one Dr. to another... to another... to another, just to get you out of THEIR office. And call you a paranoid hypochondriac, tiresome and impossible put this into your file that they send on to the next Dr.!
This then is how that new Dr. sees you and they don't want anything to do with you either, so they send you and your file on to another Dr.
All this to say, what Kristy has so PERFECTLY explained and lived just how it REALLY is!!! I applaud Kristy's courage to tell it so vividly and accurately...but also letting us see how wonderful she is INSIDE of her head and heart...and to let us feel her pain and anxiety along with her. I pray for her "return to normal" as she so desperatly wants!!!! Let us all pray for her and all those others that are living in this "hell on earth" experience!!!!!!!!

When I really like an author I read everything I can that they write. I feel truly blessed to have read this story. The courage it takes for a person to share with others their life when they are at their lowest point to me is astounding. The resiliency it takes to continue to bounce back from all that you have experienced in your life is a true testament to the incredible person you are. What I love is that the even as you searched to find yourself that attitude that I love in all your books was still there. You know the one, kind of snarky humor I call it, it's never mean in your characters, and it always cracks me up.

I lost a brother 3 years ago to suicide when his health issues and things got to be to much, he checked out. I truly believe that God lead you to share your story with others because somewhere someone will pick it up and get the help they need, or find the courage and determination they misplaced to make it through one more minute, one more hour, one more day until it gets better.
