I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered a traumatic head injury, has a loved one who has, or who works in the healthcare fields that deal with the physical and psychological recovery from these injuries. It is a poignant description of the struggles involved. Not only is your body and your life affected by such an injury, but your very personality is changed.
This is not the most well-written story out there but that is understandable since it was written during the two years Ms. James was recovering from a serious car accident. Since she is a well-established fiction author, I'm sure she could have later edited the story to smooth it out. But I'm glad she didn't because the raw words better convey what she was going through at the time, and show us how such an injury can rob us of our ability to think straight and our very sense of who we are.
The story is short but not an easy read (I read it in one evening). It does, however, end on a hopeful note as Ms. James shares those moments when she realized she was finding her motivation, her pleasure in life, and herself again.
But this kind of treatment by Ins., Drs., police, customer "service" does not JUST happen to accident victims! I have a friend and I have my own treatment that goes along with what Kristy so gallantly reports in this book!! If you have MANY health problems that are not easy to SEE...then "they" just write you off or worse yet, send to on to one Dr. to another... to another... to another, just to get you out of THEIR office. And call you a paranoid hypochondriac, tiresome and impossible patient...plus put this into your file that they send on to the next Dr.!
This then is how that new Dr. sees you and they don't want anything to do with you either, so they send you and your file on to another Dr.
All this to say, what Kristy has so PERFECTLY explained and lived thru....is just how it REALLY is!!! I applaud Kristy's courage to tell it so vividly and accurately...but also letting us see how wonderful she is INSIDE of her head and heart...and to let us feel her pain and anxiety along with her. I pray for her "return to normal" as she so desperatly wants!!!! Let us all pray for her and all those others that are living in this "hell on earth" experience!!!!!!!!
I lost a brother 3 years ago to suicide when his health issues and things got to be to much, he checked out. I truly believe that God lead you to share your story with others because somewhere someone will pick it up and get the help they need, or find the courage and determination they misplaced to make it through one more minute, one more hour, one more day until it gets better.
