Bob Seger at his 70's best.

I had this album on LP(331/3 long play) back in the day. I needed it on CD. This is Bob at his 70's best. This CD has a bunch of great tunes on it. Songs that "they" won't play on "Classic Rock" radio stations. When was the last time you heard Ain't Got No Money on the FM radio? That's what I thought.... Get this CD. It's still good.

Ode to great musicians

Their names are Barry Becket(pianos,organs,synthesizers), Pete Carr(lead guitar), David Hood(bass), Roger Hawkins(drums), Jimmy Johnson(rhythm guitar), and the Muscle Shoals Horns(Harrison Callaway,Ronnie Eads,and Harvey Thompson). Though almost always overlooked when crediting that Seger sound, that sound wouldn't have been nearly as real, raw, and soulful without that touch of Alabama funk.
Bob Seger was raised on rhythm and blues and soul music, much of which was cut in Muscle Shoals, Alabama by these men and a previous crew featuring Duane "Skydog" Allman. Thats why Seger spent most of the 70's in Muscle Shoals. That was about the only place you could get a true soul feel to mix with rock and roll and I think they succeeded fairly well.
Listen to songs like Till It Shines, Main Street, Rod Stewart's Tonight's The Night and I Don't Want To Talk About It to name a few and you can hear the unmistakable style of Pete Carr on lead guitar. David Hood, who was introduced to the world by his bass work in the Staple Singers, I'll Take You There, never failed to live up to expectations in the Muscle Shoals portions of Seger's 70's albums. Roger Hawkins, who along with Hood joined Traffic before returning home to handle the drums. Jimmy Johnson's guitar playing has been overshadowed by his skill as a producer and engineer. When the Rolling Stones came to Sheffield, Al to record Brown Sugar and Wild Horses, it was Johnson at the controls.
Then there's the man, who along with Seger is the most important part of that "Seger sound", Barry Beckett. Of all of the rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, and country music work he has done, I think he did his greatest work with Bob Seger. Everytime I listen to We've Got Tonight, a chill runs down my spine as Seger's voice and Beckett's piano soar to the top of Everest, then floats quietly down the Tennessee River.
They were magic together as was the 70's music-wise. My son's have stated how great it must have been to grow up in that decade. What an embarrassment of riches we had. Seger, the Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, the Doobie Bros, the Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Bros, Journey, Foreigner, McCartney and Lennon, the Dead, Rod Stewart, Boston, Elton John...I could go on and on and on!
Unfortunately, as Seger drifted away from the Shoals, it seemed he also drifted away from his roots. While I liked the work he did in the 80's, 90's and now the 2000's(boy that seems awkward), I much preferred the simpler, more straight-ahead music of the 70's. Of course, alot of it could be that I had rather be a teenager than closing in on the half-century mark.

A Classic!

Is there anything better than the version of "Old Time Rock & Roll" done by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band? Not for my money, there isn't.

And 1978's Stranger in Town is full of great rockin' tracks like that. "Hollywood Nights" is a true rock n' roll classic, and "Feels Like a Number" and "Ain't Got No Money" have that same bluesy rockin' vibe that infuses this album with a good amount of old fashioned rock n' roll fun.

This is balanced by Seger's great ability to pen a more thoughtful, softer rock tune, as he does in "Still the Same," "We've Got Tonite," and "The Famous Final Scene."

It all adds up to a great, classic album. Not Seger's best, but still very strong and thoroughly enjoyable.

"Stranger in Town" was my introduction to Bob Seger. I had never heard of him before a friend played the record. This album and Seger were an immedidate hit with me. Since that afternoon in 1979 I have seen Seger in concert 8-9 times and own every album/CD that he has produced in his career.
In my opinion, this record displays some of the top Seger songs done in the singer's prime. The record falls into the middle of a ten year run for Seger when he produced the best material of his career.
Most of the best known songs from this album can be found on "Nine Tonight" live album from the 1980-81 tour but you won't get the lesser known material that make the purchase of this album worthwhile.
This is a Seger classic.

This album is just fantastic. In Bob Seger's raunchy voice beautiful to hear. Tunes are: Hollywood Nights, Still The Same, Old Time Rock & Roll, Til It Shines, Feel Like A Number, Aint Got No Money, We've Got Tonight, Brave Strangers, The Famous Final Scene.
We've Got Tonight was the 'hit' here in New Zealand. Got me listening to this man for the first time. I ended up buying every record I could of his and was NEVER disappointed. A part of music history!
