I happen to like his style, even though he gets a bit overboard with the asides from time to time to time to time.
The book is divided into five sections.
The first is devoted to finding your ideal reader and to granular targeting - what it means and why you should target your 'ideal reader'.
The second, third, and fourth analyze your ideal reader's journey from finding the book to voluntarily buying and reviewing it. I found the statistics on this process enlightening and horrifying. Did you know that more than half your purchasers won't finish the book, let alone review it? Chew on that a while.
The fifth is a catch-all and summary telling you how to relaunch a book and why you should start with a re-editing rather than at the other end - with a new cover and blurb.
Gaughran's thesis is that (1) we're dealing with Buyers, and (2) they go through five phases in order to become what you really want them to be: People who Love You & Your Book So Much, that they will RECOMMEND YOUR BOOK to their FRIENDS.
Nobody does this lightly: when has a friend recommended a book highly and you thought it stank. Did you trust them again? It takes a while to rebuild that trust, assuming you ever do.
"But I want to know how to Sell my book," you complain. "All I need to do is learn to write a little better. I'll take a workshop."
Wonderful. Do that, but if you want to know why it doesn't sell, buy his bloody book and read it.
Well, David Gaughran accomplishes two things with regards to that:
- He offers well-researched, cutting edge ideas that actually work.
- He lets you know (nicely) that, hey, maybe you DON'T already know everything you think you do!
Because looking back on this book, I already knew a lot of it, I had just never put it all together in the concise way he did. And that made all the difference. Now I know exactly what to look for when reviewing each title in my backlist and publishing new titles, and more importantly, WHY.
This book certainly stands alone but there are great tips and insights in his other books as well, and they all really work well together. And definitely sign up for his emails -- you get some seriously actionable nuggets every week.
I'll close with this: In this book, Gaughran mentions that only about 40% of books actually get read to the end, and that of the ones that do, it takes an average of 6 weeks for someone to finish reading a nonfiction book. I read this one in 2 days, so that tells you something!
Good news! This book fits the bill. It has enough basic information that it will help a new author, but at the same time it has relevant information for seasoned authors. There are certain pages in my Kindle that have more highlights than not. I even had some "aha!" moments. Those don't come along often for me at this stage of the game.
I'm thrilled with this book and will be returning to it again and again. Whether you're a new author with big dreams or you've been at this for a while and are desperately in need of some inspiration, this book will help you. I've already applied some of what I've learned, and seen an uptick in sales. I can't wait to apply even more!

A few things to note:
1. This book seems to be geared to the Indie author (I did not read it’s prequel).
2. While there are a lot of things you can learn from this book even if you have a traditional publisher, know that a fair bit of his advice will be harder (if not impossible) for you to control. Things like promotions and pricing, for example.
3. If you’re starting with a grassroots marketing budget, sigh... you’ll have to learn a lot and then be creative about how to apply it. Sadly, his advice about being “discovered” is true, and there is no such thing as write a quality book and wait. Quality is only the first step, and will only help you AFTER you get discovered (and go through all the phases he covers in this book).
4. His references to Book Report and eBook Tracker are no longer valid as BR was shut down by Amazon (they must have provided a service that challenged Amazon’s), and no idea why eBook Tracker Is no longer around.
The ONLY reason this book is NOT 5 stars is bc I’m a traditionally published author and a fair bit of his recommendations aren’t applicable. But it’s a 4 star-review bc A LOT are!
I have read three of David's books and this one is well written with his usual skill for making complicated book marketing strategies seem relatively easy to comprehend. Would recommend to any writer who wishes to build a loyal band of followers.
I particularly like the way he breaks down the stages of marketing your book, states the common problems and shows you how to avoid or correct them. An authentic and massively helpful approach which I’ll be following.
My mistake probably for not reading the contents list properly.
Anyway, most will find the other content useful.
I'll now read some of the resources David mentioned, which may bring me in a roundabout way to what I was looking for...
