    This is the best option I have found to cut cakes. The only caveat is that you need a really long serrated knife. I'd say 14"is the minimum. Consider you will lose at least 1"on each side to clamp the plastic pieces to. If you want to have any freedom of movement for the cutting and you have a 9" round cake, a 14" knife leaves you 3". I would probably get an 18" knife. Only used once, so can't comment on sturdiness.

    I use this to slice off cake tops. Use at least a 10" knife to attach to and then it's easier to use. It was either this or buy a wired cake slicer but too many of those had bad reviews where the wire popped off. I like that it's adjustable so I can choose how much to cut off. Make sure your cutting surface is flat. With cakes, it's easier for me to cut the cake top off in a circle or on four sides instead of just straight through in one direction. You don't want to cut too hard and pull the knife toward your finger and cut yourself (which I did).

    This tiny little gadget is a joy to have. Not much expecting if it would work but somehow I needed to try it and it definitely works. I wish I bought this earlier! Comes in a small reclosable container which is easy to put away. All you need is a longer than usual bread knife and then, slice away. I have not tried it for bread but I am sure it will work as long as your bread size is within the height accommodated in the height of the two slicer ends.

    I used these and the first time I did, they worked really well. That was on an 8" cake. On the 10" cake I had to keep checking that each of the devices was still on the counter top. They have a tendency to lift slightly with a bigger cake and long knife. I still think it made a much easier job of getting the cake levels right and that was especially important for my daughter's wedding cake.
