That said, we love the sparkling water and drink up quite a bit of it. Delicious yet simple with fresh lemon or lime. Just plain is fine, too; so much better than still. We've never bothered with any syrups.
Update: 15 months on, the soda maker still works. The twisting tab to lock and unlock the unit for charging can be a little stubborn, but thus far has not failed. It's as essential to us as the coffee maker, even though we just use it primarily for plain sparkling tap water. For two adults and a toddler, we keep five carafes in rotation, which helps ensure we always have some cold ones on hand, even if we let a few empties stack up before refilling.Read more ›
I was a bit put off by the much higher price for the Crystal vs the cheaper models that come with a plastic bottle. I had trouble justifying paying twice as much just to get a glass bottle. But I knew I would never be comfortable with the plastic so I returned the Fizz I had previously bought and got myself a Crystal SodaStream.
I still feel that this unit is overpriced and preying on those who strongly dislike plastic, but there is nothing wrong with the product itself, so I am giving it 5 stars. I also can see where some of the added cost comes. This model doesn't just have a glass bottle, but the machine completely encases the bottle while it is being carbonated. I imagine this is because exploding glass is much more dangerous than exploding plastic and the fact that it is encased will prevent injury.
The Crystal SodaStream is solid and feels well-built. I have used it almost every evening for 3 months to make 2 glasses of sparkling water and I still have CO2 left. I love that I don't have to haul bottles of sparkling water to my house and also that those bottles aren't going to a landfill somewhere. All in all, I am very happy with this purchase. I just wish it was cheaper.
Update- November 2013 - Still using this SodaStream regularly and love it! Have never had any problems with it, nothing has broken. The cost has definitely been worth it in the long term, as it has saved me a ton in bottled sparkling water.
We had a basic Sodastream, but upgraded to this model because of the plastic bottles. Huge mistake. Actually we doubled down and bought one for us and one for the in-laws. Double mistake. Both machines malfunctioned within a month or so of use. (The bubbled water wouldn't be contained in the bottle, but would spray out into the chamber - I'm no technician but I suppose some seal somewhere, somehow broke). But here's the beauty: the replacement machine they sent arrived broken! That's three broken machines in a row. The seem to have some huge quality control issues in making these things.
At the same time, let me praise their customer service. After trying to get us to fix the problem through some stuff they could do, they replace the machines (and then the faulty replacement). No hassles of any kind, prompt replies to e-mails, an 800 number. I mean it is work, but they aren't one of those companies who give you hard time.
I'm torn on what to suggest. If you don't mind the plastic bottles (we do, but it's a personal thing - we don't like plastic bottles) then the Sodastream Fountain Jet (the basic model) is really good -- less mechanical parts that an go wrong. Our basic model lasted 2+ years without any trouble. We switched over to the Penguin, which actually is an older model, not as well designed in some ways as the Crystal, but we figured since it's an older model perhaps it would be less likely to have a manufacturing flaw. So far it's a month later, and we're ok. But I'll report back if we have problems.
This is really a pity - as a concept and if working properly this is a 5-star product for me. But this level of unreliability is a huge problem.
