REAL vs fake 88061 lights
5 out of 5 stars
REAL vs fake 88061 lights
The purpose of this review is to describe additional subtle differences between genuine and fake flashlights. The background story is that I bought this light because I had a handful of CR123 batteries that weren't good enough to drive a smoke detector but still registered reasonable life on a voltmeter -- so I wanted to use those up rather than dispose of good batteries, but I didn't want to be locked into a CR123-only light. I initially bought a light from what looked like a reputable seller on eBay. The light arrived and as far as I could tell, both packaging and light looked genuine. Other reviewers have pointed out that fake lights: 1. don't include batteries 2. don't have a SL logo on the button 3. have a black-colored tailcap gasket (instead of orange) 4. does not have springs on both ends of the light to hold the battery The light I received did not have any of these issues so I felt pretty good about having received a genuine light. However, some reviews also point out that in addition to all of the above, counterfeit lights also cannot be programmed using SL's Ten-tap system, and this was true of my light. When I tried to program the light using Ten-tap, the light would stay on with the 10th click/hold, rather than extinguish like a real light. So, I started to wonder if this was actually a fake light. I ordered another light directly from Amazon (Amazon was the vendor) which I received today and it appears that this new light is genuine. When I stare at the two lights and packaging side-by-side, the differences are EXTREMELY subtle, to the point that I had to wonder if the original light simply had a malfunctioning Ten-tap and that the differences I was seeing were simple manufacturing variance. On the attached photos, the suspected counterfeit light is on the top, and the real light (shipped from Amazon proper) is on the bottom. Here are the additional differences that I have found: 1. The ink used on the real light is a bit thicker than the counterfeit one - the fake one has ink that is slightly translucent and makes it look a bit like a factory second. This is really subtle and difficult to tell unless you have a real/fake side-by-side. 2. The word "TEN-TAP" on the flashlight is the same height and font size as the adjacent word "PROGRAMMABLE". On the fake one the "TEN-TAP" is just slightly more squished and lower height than the adjacent word, as if the aspect ratio were off. 3. The line spacing of the text above and below "Patented" is equal on the real light whereas on the counterfeit light the S/N line is much closer to "Patented" than is the "TEN-TAP" line. Again unnoticeable unless you are aggressively comparing a real and counterfeit light side-by-side. 4. The machining of the knurling on the tailcap is different. On a legitimate light, there is a slight 3D depth to the texture -- the grooves are both wide AND deep enough to catch a fingernail. The fake light has a texture that is smoother and with grooves that are more shallow. 5. The lanyard hole on the real light was smaller than the one on the fake light I received (see pic #2) 6. The overall texture of the light on the fake light had a textured glossiness (but very smooth to the touch) vs. a more textured matte finish on the genuine light (pic #2) 7. On the pocket clip there are two cutout notches flanking the long part of the clip that are oriented parallel to the axis of the light -- they are slightly longer on the real light than the fake light (pic #3) 8. The button/switch action is much smoother and easier to depress with the genuine light 9. FInally, on the packaging, the fake light had a California Prop 65 cancer warning (the real one didn't, surprisingly.) On both packages (real and fake) the cardboard insert had a cutout that showed the flashlight -- the real packaging had a corresponding cutout on the plastic packaging while the fake one had plastic covering the cutout. So, that's it. These are immensely subtle differences and without an actual side-by-side comparison, I think they would be quite difficult to identify in isolation. Good luck out there!

I originally bought one of these about 10 years ago and have used it every day at work. After 10 years, it wouldn't come on and I thought it was broken so I bought another. After looking over the broken light, I was able to determine that the only thing wrong was the battery spring on the cap had become compressed after years of changing batteries. By stretching the spring back out, the light has worked perfect since. Other some missing paint due to dropping numerous times, this light has held up perfectly. I had already purchased a new one but wanted to keep it as a light around my house. Light is extremely bright and versatile due to accepting multiple battery types. I also love the reverse clip that allows you to clip the light on the bill of your hat and free up both of your hands.

Extremely durable, good light output, very easy to lose. The duel clip is great, it'll take a dip, will take abuse and doesn't suffer from parasitic drain. A great little pocket light or for keeping around the house during a blackout. There are other, brighter, higher candela lights from streamlight you should consider for self defence.

I like this light so much that I have picked up 2 more for gifts. This light is plenty bright. Here is why I recommend it:

    1. Programmable: I don't use the strobe mode, so it is disabled. Single press for low... double press and it is on high. For a small light it throws a lot of light
    2. Small: Fits in pocket and you forget it is even there. That means you will always have it.
    3. Dual battery options. For the most light, use the Lithium battery. If you run out, you can use standard AA. Nice to have options. Lithium will last longer and be brighter, but more expensive.
    4. The clip works on pants but also for on hat brim (hands free use for the win)

My original light that I use EVERY single day is easily 4 years old. The finish is all scratched up but it keeps working. If it breaks, I'll buy another one.

I bought this as a lightweight option to mount on my home defense firearm. It's a lot smaller than I was expecting, and lighter, too. I will be buying another for dedicated EDC pocket carry. I'm taking a star off for a few quibbles that bug me.
First, the pros. This thing is a lot smaller than I anticipated. That was a majorly pleasant surprise. Being more compact, it's also a lot lighter. Given this is mounted on my firearm, I'm definitely a fan. There are times when I like my lights to have some heft, but firearm mount is not one of them. Another major (and obvious) pro is the option for two different kinds of batteries. I personally use the CR123 option for the firearm as it's brighter, but with pocket carry I'm more inclined to use an AA lithium battery for the longer life. It's nice to have that kind of flexibility either way. There are not a lot of flashlights out there that give you multiple options in terms of how you power it.
The cons (for me). The tail cap switch is mildly infuriating, in terms of trying to get the light turned on to the setting I want. The first day or two I kept doing full clicks trying to get to the low brightness setting, or even the strobe, but could not for the life of me do anything more than just turn it on or off. It wasn't until several days later and finally googling the flashlight to find out you do a rapid "half-click" either twice (for strobe) or three times (for low brightness), with the last half-click actually being a full click to set it. So, you'd do a single full click for full brightness, half-click full click for strobe, or half-click half-click full click for low brightness. You think that sounds complicated? Wait until you actually try to do it. Either I'm horribly uncoordinated or slightly on the low end of the IQ scale, because it was maddeningly infuriating to attempt my various combinations of half-clicks and full clicks before I'd finally end up on the setting I was going for. After all those attempts, I've decided I'm good with just a single full click to turn it on, on the HD gun. The second quibble is the price. I paid about forty bucks for the light, only a few dollars more than either the CR123-only version or the AA-only version. That in and of itself is not a terrible price to pay for a decently bright flashlight. My issue is, this is not the only flashlight I've ever bought in my life. And there are others out there that are the same quality, but with far more features, for only a few bucks more in price. Granted, they're also bigger and heavier with longer run times on their batteries, but I'm having a hard time reconciling the price/value balance of this light, when I try it out alongside those.
Again, those quibbles are just me, and my own subjective biased opinion. Your mileage may vary. At the end of the day, I like it enough that I'm buying another one, and I'd gladly recommend the light to friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Streamlight quality is impressive
Reviewed in Canada on May 27, 2025
I purchased this item because I've owned a Streamlight 'Stylus Pro' model for a very long time and it has been a great little flashlight. This model is approximately half the length of the Stylus Pro and it fits nicely in almost any pocket. The threads on the flashlight are extremely well machined and it never requires any fumbling around to screw the sections back together after changing the battery. The rubber cap over the On/Off switch is replaceable, as are the little rubber O-rings, but the cap on my old Stylus Pro is still in great condition so I don't know how frequently it needs to be changed. All in all this is a great little flashlight that will last for a very long time.
