Editorial Reviews

The Persuasions carved a niche for themselves by performing that purest of all music styles-a capella, singing without support instrumentation. Street Corner Symphony , originally released on Island in the early '70s, has been reproduced here by Collectables and includes some of their most popular performances: Buffalo Soldier; People Get Ready; I Could Never Love Another; Don't Look Back/Runaway Child , and more.

Of all the instruments out there, the first and still the finest by far is the human voice. This CD makes the point emphatically. This is real, old-fashioned, four-part harmony - stunningly tight and precise a cappella. So much music today is sloppy and self-indulgent, with technology covering up the shabbiness. Here there is nowhere to hide, this is pure music.

The virtuoso level of performance is consistent throughout, from heart-wrenching blues, Buffalo Soldier, to smooth love crooning, So Much In Love, to foot-stompin' jubilee, Be Good To Me Baby. The pacing, beat, and rhythm are all there in abundance - with no drum kit in sight. When the Persuasions take you through their tribute to The Temptations, Tempts Jam, you'll find yourself wondering if you actually heard what you think you heard.

The energy, passion, technical excellence, and sheer joy contained in these tracks is enough to blow the spots off a leopard.

"Street Corner Symphony" is, in my opinion, the ultimate work of the Persuasions!! This particular piece of musical vocal mastery is one I have listened to for over 20 years. I purchased the CD and each time I play this master piece, I can't help but listen to it over and over again as I find myself singing right along with the group. THIS IS A MUST PURCHASE and I promise will be a life time part of your musical library!!!

All ethnicities inherently possess some form of group vocal expression to tell a story; the earliest method of basic teaching from one generation to the next. Intersections where cultures cross to understand one another, leave an imprint. Music, as a harmonious expression of language and song, automatically creates cultural intersections.
The Persuasions Street Corner Symphony,(their third album after Acappella,1970; and We Came To Play,1971) arrived in late 1971 and created more traffic at the A cappella intersection.
In 1966 original members, Jerry Lawson - lead, Joe Russell - second tenor/lead, Jimmy Hayes - Base, Herb Rhoad - baritone and Jayotis Washington - first tenor, converged from street corners in Detroit, North & South Carolina, Florida and Virginia, respectively, bringing with them music backgrounds that drew from gospel, traditional choir as well as early-to present R&B and, not surprisingly, rock.
Persuasions gifted talent, graded "excellent" by fans and peers, was also attributed to submission to rigorous rehearsals, tight arrangements and a desire to succeed in a difficult music genre.
Street Corner Symphony is a terrific collection, period. Beginning with a hauntingly sweet historic era based opening to "Buffalo Soldier" whose layered harmony sounds much larger and a "call out" lead singer asking two questions before Jimmy's base line begins, a story unto itself.
What makes the album a classic is an uncanny balance of songs. For example: harmonizing The Hollies (English rock group) 1969 song, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and blending it with Carole King's smash hit, "You've Got A Friend." Or how about singing Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me", Persuasions-style.

I stumbled upon this by mistake. As I cleaned out some old tapes that I purchased during the 70's, I ran across this gem. Now, I had not heard this group since the 70's and definitely thought that this tape was beyond listening. But after popping it in, the tears started flowing. Oh My! It's love all over. The simultaneous weaving of the vocals brings about auditory pleasures that are a far cry from the sounds of today. Each voice is like a fine tuned instrument. As I write this, I still have that 30 year old tape and a new CD simply called "Street Corner Symphony"...What a gem!

This is a Fantastic CD! I've been listening to it for over five years, and it sounds as great as it did the first time I heard it! Many groups have tried to copy the Persuasions, but none has ever come close. This is my favorite of all their CD's. Doo-Wop and vocal Group fans that I know seem to like "We Came To Play" better, but not me, this is my favorite. There is another group that the same company made available that I like too, The Doo-Wop Cops, they have a similar sound.

This is one of my favorite albums from the 70's. Jerry Lawson and friends were in great voice, and the songs are an homage to some of the more significant songwrters/perfomers of the time like Curtis Mayfield, Carol King, the Hollies, Norman Whitfield, and the Temptations.
My particular favorite is "Buffalo Soldier", which tells the story of black troopers who went West to fight in the Indian wars. It's a largely unknown story, one I didn't know until I listened to the Persuasions. They so aroused my curiosity that I went to the library and learned about a small chapter in history that is largely forgotten. In my mind, I've thanked them ever since.

Street Corner Symphony - no beat boxing, no voices trying to sound like trumpets or guitars, just straight-up a cappella.
