“I heartily recommend this workbook! Gina Biegel has crafted a series of mindfulness practices and reflections that are easily accessible, inviting, and wise. Teens who take the time to ‘work’ this workbook will gain insights about mindfulness, stress, and the mind-body connection that should benefit and serve them for years to come.”
—Jeff Brantley, MD, director of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program at Duke Integrative Medicine and coauthor of Five Good Minutes® in Your Body

I am a professor at University of California, Davis. For the last 10 years I have been impressed with the Stress Reduction training using Mindfulness. First developed my Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at University of Massachusetts, the training has proven effective at reducing the stress levels of thousands of people around the world. Many health plans now have added a Stress Reduction course because of its proven effects at enhancing health and well-being. Now Gina Biegel has tailored this training to fit the massive stresses that teenagers face today. The book has come out of her own work with teens, and is backed up by her research in scientific journals. I highly recommend this book to every teenager and parent. I wish I had read it when I was a teen!

As a mindfulness-based psychotherapist working with adolescents and their families, I find this workbook to be an invaluable tool for teaching mindfulness to my clients. This workbook is useful in conjunction with a structured MBSR class, and can also be used alone. It encourages healthy dialogue and self-reflection and I recommend it highly for anyone working with the adolescent population.

This is a really great workbook for everyone, and especially teens because the language, activities and insights feel open and real. As a teacher, I can imagine my students benefiting deeply from these stress reduction techniques, and from the self-reflection opportunities. Truly it reaches across age groups, I'm finding it a very helpful practice for myself. Highly recommended.

My teen gave this 2 thumbs down. She said they were doing activities like this with the guidance counselor in elementary school and that no self respecting high schooler would use it. It would be good for middle school at the oldest.

As a therapist that frequently works with teenagers, I found this book to be of immediate clinical use. The activities in this book are easily used with adolescents that are motivated to change and with some creativity less motivated adolescents will engage in the stress reduction activities. It is written in a simple, easy to read language that is appropriate for a 13-17yr old. Further, many of the activities as consistent with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and can be used as part of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treatment plan. Well worth the price!!

Frankly, I felt very insulted when my mom bought this for me. When I said I was stressed out about school all needed was understanding nod, not this. Writing in this book does not help stress! Nothing stops the on coming stress of SATs, physics tests, and college applications. This books talks to you like a five year old, any self respecting teen wouldn't be caught dead using this. I would say using this for somebody who is just learning to read would be a better fit. Also if you're reading this mom, please take this book off the living room shelf, I worry that guests think I'm sort of anxiety-prone weirdo. Instead of telling my parents how I feel, next time I'll just go up to my room and study.
Please don't buy this for your teen, it's an insult.

As a mindfulness practitioner and school psychologist, I really wanted to love this workbook, but...
Even though some of the reviews suggest that it would be better to use with younger children (not high school), I disagree. I would suggest to parents that this workbook would be more appropriate for bright high school students or even college-aged students.

While the examples/fictional stories of teens in the book can be simplistic or a little cliche, much of the wording throughout seems a bit advanced and abstract for most of the students that I work with. For instance, the idea of "being with what is" is used, but this phrasing might be too abstract for some young readers. Mindfulness skills can and should be accessible to everyone. This workbook is a step in the right direction, but it felt too rushed and introduced concepts without really explaining them ahead of time (e.g., helping to differentiate between thoughts, feelings, and sensations before asking teens to track them). It may be most helpful for teens who have had some background/introduction to mindfulness concepts already.

The workbook also involves a great deal of writing and reflection, which could make it off-putting and inaccessible to teens who dislike writing, have trouble with expressive communication, or have little-to-know experience with this kind of self-reflection. Yes, I know that it is a "workbook", but I think it would have been helpful to include more visuals and graphic organizers in the book to help students understand the concepts and help guide them through the reflections (instead of using so many blanks for sentence-writing). There are so many powerful images and analogies that can be used to really bring home the concepts of mindfulness.

This book can be for anyone! Not just teens! It's easy-to-read format is fun!
It does require some thought, but in a good way!
Not to the point of exhaustion.
Page 10 is one of my favorite pages in the book.
Give it a try!
Also, the language isn't hard. Easy words.
The print is a nice size, too! This book is a game-changer,
and a life enhancer all in one! It helps w/ my sleep and my
eating! Before this book I was sleeping for only 6 hours straight.
Now I'm getting 7 or 8 hours in a row! I'm amazed!
