From two leading child and adolescent mental health experts comes a guide for the parents of every college and college-bound student who want to know what’s normal mental health and behavior, what’s not, and how to intervene before it’s too late.

“The title says it all...Chock full of practical tools, resources and the wisdom that comes with years of experience,
The Stressed Years of their Lives is destined to become a well-thumbed handbook to help families cope with this modern age of anxiety.” ―Brigid Schulte, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, author of Overwhelmed and director of the Better Life Lab at New America

All parenting is in preparation for letting go. However, the paradox of parenting is that the more we learn about late adolescent development and risk, the more frightened we become for our children, and the more we want to stay involved in their lives. This becomes particularly necessary, and also particularly challenging, in mid- to late adolescence, the years just before and after students head off to college. These years coincide with the emergence of many mood disorders and other mental health issues.

When family psychologist Dr. B. Janet Hibbs's own son came home from college mired in a dangerous depressive spiral, she turned to Dr. Anthony Rostain. Dr. Rostain has a secret superpower: he understands the arcane rules governing privacy and parental involvement in students’ mental health care on college campuses, the same rules that sometimes hold parents back from getting good care for their kids. Now, these two doctors have combined their expertise to corral the crucial emotional skills and lessons that every parent and student can learn for a successful launch from home to college.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is a hopeful and essential guide that promotes emotional health and mental fitness in young people. The authors address the realities of mental illness and offer models for prevention, treatment, and recovery. A must-read for parents, educators, and clinicians." ―Patrick J. Kennedy, author of A Common Struggle, and sponsor of Paritytrack.org

“Childhood is disappearing for young adults, with the pressure to perform, the seductions of social media and the fears of an uncertain future, as stress, anxiety and depression are reaching epidemic proportions. I can think of no better guide than
The Stressed Years of Their Lives for overwhelmed parents and stressed-out kids for navigating these turbulent times. This is required reading for the college set.” ―Brigid Schulte, author of the New York Times bestselling Overwhelmed: Work, Love and Play when No One has the Time, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, director of The Better Life Lab at New America

“College-related anxiety and pressure on both parents and children begins long before the admissions process, changes and intensifies in college and has been escalating, alarming educators, mental health professionals and, of course, families themselves. Drs. Hibbs and Rostain have battled in this arena with courage, insight and a wealth of professional training and experience. This wonderful book defines and explores the many, varied minefields of the college years with candor and compassion, and provides parents with practical advice and support about what to look for, what to ask and say, and when and how to intervene. Having seen these pressures both as a parent and university president, I am grateful that there is now this long-overdue and extraordinary guide. It should be required reading for all parents.” ―
Judith Rodin, former Provost of Yale University and President Emerita of the University of Pennsylvania

“When Drs. Rostain and Hibbs tell us that the crisis of mental health on campus is ‘epidemic,’ they know what they’re talking about. They’ve not only studied the problem extensively, they’ve treated it and lived it, and as this measured, compelling, and vitally important book makes clear, they’re not prone to exaggeration. They’ve also proven themselves uniquely adept in moving the conversation from diagnosis to treatment and prevention. This book is a must-read for college administrators, high school counselors, policymakers and above all, parents of students of all ages, who (if they’re like me) will start implementing its insights long before they reach its end. A truly great contribution.” ―
Judith Warner, Washington Post bestselling author of Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety

“Hibbs and Rostain have done a great service for parents trying to guide their kids through the transition to adulthood and college life in this high stress world. They’ve written an engaging and accessible book full of common sense guidance and tremendous clinical wisdom. They provide both specific advice about the important issues to consider and what parents and kids can do to be best positioned to address those issues in order to succeed and thrive.” ―
Victor Schwartz, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at The Jed Foundation and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, NYU School of Medicine

The Stressed Years of Their Lives is an informative, thought-provoking and―perhaps most importantly―conversation-starting curation of mental health information that all parents need to read. With robust research woven throughout deeply compelling stories of real young adults and their families, the book paints a clear picture of the struggles that young adults of today are facing; the way parents, and young adults, and schools can be partners in success; and the message that help is available and there are so many reasons to have hope.” ―Alison K. Malmon, founder & executive director of Active Minds

"This is the type of book every parent should read before discussions of college even begin. Packing in just the right amount of statistics and real-world scenarios, two doctors offer sound advice on how parents can better prepare their children for the challenging college years that lie ahead of them." ―
Kirkus

There has long been a crying need for a book offering sound and sensible advice to parents of college-bound daughters and sons. Now with that need never greater, Dr.’s Hibbs and Rostain have come to the rescue with The Stressed Years of Their Lives!
In their clearly written and well organized guide for perplexed and anxious parents, the authors include real life vignettes to illustrate key points and principles. The unambiguous advice they offer is well grounded in extensive clinical experience and expertise.
A disclaimer: I esteem both authors as colleagues, and in addition, Dr. Hibbs as a dear friend. So, you might consider this review less than fully objective, but when I say that the authors are not only highly regarded as clinicians, but are also good, kind, and warm people, note that my up-close perspective has a value of its own.
That said, we know the teenage years can be ones of angst and tumult, if only internally. Hibbs and Rostain write that when our teens go to college, they may be extremely well prepared academically, but lacking in the skills to cope with less than stellar performance, first loves and heartbreak, and what can be a pervasive drinking culture.
I’d recommend that parents read this book several times, and again, over time. If your son or daughter is in middle or junior high school, start reading it now, as that would seem to be when competitive college admission pressures start building. And if your son or daughter is already in college, read it now and yearly.
This book has especially important messages for parents of children with established mental health issues or ADHD, or those with problematic sleep, anxiety or mood. Also likely to benefit are parents of any child with difficulties socially, who has had trouble making major transitions in life or locale, as well as those who’ve never been away from home, or had a hard time when away.
Parents of college students whose race, language, culture, and religious customs and beliefs, sexual orientation, or gender identity diverges from the norm will especially want to read this book. Also likely to find the book useful are parents abroad, especially in parts of the world that might be viewed as alien, and of a race or religion unfortunately maligned by some Americans.
Others who would benefit from reading the book include:
    • High school teachers and guidance counselors and advisors
    • College and university administrators
    • Staff of college and university student medical clinics and counseling centers
    • Resident Advisors in college dormitories
Entities that rate colleges and universities, should evaluate the extent to which it has the resources for students that Hibbs and Rostain stress: A supportive environment, safe spaces and organizations that foster resiliency skills, hotlines, and of course, rapid availability of professional help.
In conclusion, this book is truly a godsend!
    Stephen E. Levick, M.D.

I am not someone who usually reads self help books, but this one caught my attention after hearing Dr. Hibbs interviewed on NPR. This mother put it all out there, for everyone to read, the failures as well as the successes, in order to help guide other parents through the maze that is raising a child in today's world. Her book walks us through the things that can go wrong and how to recognize them so they can be dealt with proactively. This rational approach of addressing issues of mental illness (in all the myriad forms), suicide and substance abuse directly, rather than sticking your head in the sand and hoping that everything turns out OK, seems irrefutable to me. Not only can this book save families from years of heartache, and thoughts of "if only", it can save your child from growing up to become someone who is haunted by all of the fears and anxieties that never got addressed. I think every parent out there wants their child to have a happy and productive life and it is a parent's responsibility to make sure that everything that can be done, is done, to get them there. If you use the tools in this book, then you have taken an important step in making sure that your child is someone that comes out the other side of childhood as a confident and mentally healthy adult, and is someone of whom you can be proud.

This book is intended for confused parents who are worried about their children going to college. It provides a bunch of standard medical advice from a psychologist's viewpoint. The most appealing part was when the author wrote about her own experiences dealing with her son and mental illness. There is a sense of fear, uncertainty, and confusion that medical advice never talks about. This is a side of the struggle against mental illness that people rarely talk about and it's critical to people's recovery.

It's strange how the book goes from giving dry advice backed by science and numbers into a personal story. Honestly, I didn't really care for the dry advice part and stopped reading when the author finished her story about her son... But overall it's still a good book. The advice reflects modern understanding. There are some recommendations that I question but doesn't ruin the entire book for me,

I have been practicing psychiatry for over 40 years. As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I teach, see patients, work as a therapist and am a professor at a prestigious academic institution. In my practice I see a number of high school and college kids. We are in the midst of a serious mental health crisis. Current research shows that 75% of college students have a mental health crisis in school; 2-3 college students take their lives daily in the US, and in large universities the ratio of certified mental health counselors to students is about 1:3000. There is also recent data that from 2000 – 2017, the suicide rate rose by 47% among teens 15-19 and 36% among those 20-24. Other new research shows that young people are the loneliest of any age group. Not a pretty picture! The fact is that transition age youth (ages 14-26) are seriously stressed and suffering. While they certainly need guidance, parents and those who care for our youth need the guidance first, and this book provides this in a thoughtful, sensitive and systematic fashion. As a professional in the field I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

I have the audio copy and a hardcover copy of this book. I have a junior in high school who was diagnosed with GAD and ADHD since he was 12. Reading this book made me realized that I too suffered from anxiety in college and medical school. While it did not derailed me from graduating from a highly selective college, I did not leave college with any friends or happy memories. This is a must have for any parent who has a high schooler or freshman in college. It is a guide, and a how to book with powerful stories of young adults who suffers from mental disorder or developmental disorder.
