THenI has horrified by the fact that you can ture the lock with your fingernail but soon realized that although you can turn it ,it won't unlock, it can only lock/unlock with the key, so *WHEW!!!*
This is really good except I think the spacing is a bit too large.
I LOVE THIS JOURNAL!!!
1. get the turning part to line up with the other whole exactly.
2. insert the key.
3. turn the key one way all the way around.
4. then when it stops, turn it all the way around the other way.
5. then, finally, pust the thing that sticks out on the right of the lock.
Then WALAHH its opened! its confusing to open so im not really worried about people breaking into it. The lock hasnt broken yet as people say it would.
I recommend this journal to all girls that wanna write their thoughts somewhere!
The size & the colors are very appropriate for young girls. And the idea that it locks will give that sense of privacy.
I am very happy that I chose this journal for my granddaughter.

This is a really nice journal for a teenage girl. My granddaughter loves it. She had a little trouble with the key at first, but after a few jiggles it seems to work just fine.Published on February 8, 2012 by silly_me
What good is a locking journal with no key? I sent this back and had to drive over 60 miles and an hour to find a much better locking journal at Barnes & Nobles. Read morePublished on August 16, 2010 by Dan Crowder
The lock is a great idea. My son loved it. Had a hard time with the key. It has to line up perfectly straight (90 degree angle) in order to lock and unlock. Read morePublished on July 25, 2010 by TonyK
