Vintage Alter!!! If you are interested in a literary approach to the Bible this and the other translation and notes that he has done for the Hebrew Bible are indispensible for your study and learning. Even if you are more traditional in your approach to the text this is still a great tool to help you understand the literary charachteristics of the different books of the Bible. It is a great help for private learning as well as helping with preparing for classes and sermons. I have used Alter's work in my studies for years and I always find more on subsequent readings.

Translation and commentary on the book of Daniel are worth the cost of the book (which doesn't imply agreement with everything he says). The other translations and commentary are fascinating as well. If you have an interest in these books of the Old Testament you owe it to yourself to have this translation with helpful notes on it.

Another beautiful commentary by Robert Alter. This is a commentary on some of the books that are part of the Ketuvim, the strange and wonderful books that surround Torah and Nabiim. Alter does what he does best: he translates and explains in such a way that you understand the text as a whole better. And therefore this book is a must have for every vicar. Reading a commentary can sometimes give the experience of entering a maze; the biblical text is cut into tiny pieces and the reasons for doing so can be very obscure and more prompted by modern ideas about what can be called an inconsistency than doing right by the text. So that you are more preoccupied with discovering the reason for the cut than finding a theme in the text. Not this book though. The literary themes are clearly lined out in the preface to every book, and supported by the accurate and beautiful translation and annotation of the text. And having a clear understanding of the themes and the texts gives much clearer sermons.

What is there left to say about Robert Alter's translations of the Bible?
I am sure the sticklers will find issues with various words here and there, but this is a pleasure to read - both the translation and the commentary.
I am capable and enjoy reading the Bible in the original Hebrew, but Alter gives it another flavor.
Awaiting the rest of his great undertaking.

Over the years, I have bought -- and READ -- everything, I think, that Robert Alter has published. He has added so much to my understanding of Hebrew texts. Thanks!

This is the latest book in Alter's translation and commentary of the Jewish testament. The translation is very fresh (especially Daniel and Esther) and the commentary is very insightful. If you are interested in the Jewish testament at all Alter's is a must including this book.
