I want to raise kids who love Jesus. But I don’t want them to be so independent they miss the point of following Jesus – to glorify God – and fail to notice others around him. This is what I thought about as I read “Strong and Kind” by Korie Robertson.
Strong and kind are the characteristics she wants her kids to exhibit. She discusses these and other admirable traits in the book. And I’m revising my statement: I want to raise kids are compassionate and joyful – and love Jesus, of course.
In her book, Korie reminded me that while being intentional with a couple traits is a good parenting plan, ultimately raising someone who follows Jesus means there will be evidence of many traits that tend to overlap anyway.
I appreciated Korie’s family-first approach to living in community and using that environment to shape who children become. She spends the first part of the book sharing about the importance of good character with many personal examples. The second section is devoted to identifying the character traits you want to see in your children. Finally, the third part offers advice on how to parent kids of character.
“Strong and Kind” isn’t a how-to book, but it is a resource with much encouragement, Biblical foundation, and real-life stories.
Korie Robertson, with help from her husband Willie and her mother, Chrys Howard (side note: Mrs. Howard, a former teacher and publishing executive, co-authored a couple of books with Willie's mom.) has published a parenting book. Strong and Kind: and Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed focusses on building character in your children. Rather than focussing on some of the traditional topics of parenting books, Korie writes that after 20 years of parenting her 5 kids, she believes "the most important thing for parents to decide . . . is what values are important to your family and how you will go about instilling those values in your children."
Korie and Willie have chosen to focus on two: strength and kindness. (I couldn't help thinking of Cinderella's mother's dying admonition to her daughter: "Have courage and be kind.") They challenge their readers to select these or any other pair of virtues to teach their children. Different parent and child personalities will lend some values to be more fitting than others. Besides strength and kindness they discuss self-control, honesty, compassion, patience, joy, loyalty, and humility. They write that this list is not exhaustive, and that there is much overlap among some of these, but that by choosing to emphasize two, many of the others naturally develop.Read more ›
All that said, I still think this was a really neat parenting book. Korie didn’t say, do this or don’t do that. She talked about different traits and how we impart them to our children. I loved it!
Korie talked about how we should look at who we want our kids to become, and then model that in our own lives. That basis alone makes this one of the best parenting books ever. If you know who Korie Robertson is and if you have ever seen her show, you will love this book. If you are like me and haven’t seen her show, then I still think it is a great read.
I will add that Korie seems to have a very bold personality. She is very firm in her beliefs and a few statements she made rubbed me the wrong way. They were firmly worded opinions, one I agreed with but still was taken aback by the wording she used. Another I could see her point, but she worded it very harshly. We all have opinions we feel strongly about, I just found it ironic that in a book about kindness, she didn’t choose to word her thoughts with kindness.
The other down side to this book was that the pages seemed super thin. If you are like me and love to highlight, I recommend using a gel highlighter (that’s what I did). And I did highlight a BUNCH.
I love the Robertson family and enjoy watching them on TV. I do think that it times the book comes across with a bit of a self-satisfied air. But that might just be because I enjoy the self-effacing humor of authors like Jen Hatmaker.
